The body facts. By: Charlotte M

The Digestive System Facts The digestive system is responsible for the breaking down of food that we eat into smaller compartments so that nutrients can easily be absorbed by the body and the waste discarded There are two types of digestion. Mechanical digestion is the physical breakdown of large pieces of food into smaller pieces through, chewing (mastication). While chemical digestion uses enzymes to break down this food mass further into small molecules which the body can separate and use. Saliva in our mouths plays a key role in initial digestion by moistening the food to help with the mechanical chewing and swallowing process. Saliva also contains an enzyme which starts the chemical digestion of starchy foods.

The Heart Facts!!!!! The heart, blood and blood vessels together make up the circulatory system. The heart pumps the blood through the blood vessels to all the different tissues of the body. This blood carries water, oxygen and nutrients. Blood is also important for removing waste products from the body. The heart is essential for your survival! Your heart is constantly working, even when you are resting. The heart is located in-between your right and left lungs in the middle of your chest slightly towards your left .

The brain!!! The human brain is like a powerful computer that stores our memory and controls how we as humans think and react. It has evolved over time and features some incredibly intricate parts that scientists still struggle to understand. The brain is the centre of the human nervous system, controlling our thoughts, movements, memories and decisions. The brain contains billions of nerve cells that send and receive information around the body.

Bones and muscles How many bones are in your body Muscles. There are 270 bones in your body when you are first born but when you are older you have 206. You have less bones when you are older because some bones fuse together. Human bones grow continually from birth till our mid 20's. Our skeleton's bone mass is at its maximum density around the age of 30. Your muscles are soft tissues in the body of a human or animal. Its main purpose is to produce force and movement. Muscles are responsible for maintaining posture, physical movement (sitting, walking, eating, etc.), and movement of internal organs (such as keeping the heart pumping to circulate blood and moving food through the digestive system).

Facts about blood cells. The heart pumps blood to your lungs to pick up oxygen. The oxygen-rich blood is then pumped out to your body through your arteries. It's bright red at this point. From your arteries, the blood flows through tiny blood vessels called capillaries, where it gives up its oxygen to the body's tissues.

Stomach acid and the stomach. Stomach acid can also be known as gastric juice and gastric acid. It is a digestive fluid formed in the stomach and is composed of hydrochloric acid. Stomach acid is not something most people think about. Yet it’s one of the most important aspects of your digestive system! The stomach is a muscular organ located on the left side of the upper abdomen. The stomach receives food from the oesophagus. ... The stomach secretes acid and enzymes that digest food. Ridges of muscle tissue called rogue line the stomach. The stomach muscles contract periodically, churning food to enhance digestion.
