Raise Your Attendance - Raise Your Chances! What does “Good attendance” actually mean in Blaenbaglan?

Do you know what your child’s attendance was last year? If not, why not? It was given in the end of year report. Contact us to find out! Would you know what it means?

This is Simon. He is in Year 3 and has 90% attendance. Is that good? What does this mean?

Simon thinks this is pretty good, so do his parents. Are they right? 90% attendance = ½ day missed every SINGLE week!! (Would your boss like you to be off work this much?) That’s practically part time! Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri ? Absent half a day every week

Let’s look a little closer….. 1 school year at 90% attendance is equivalent to 4 whole weeks of lessons MISSED!!! 38 school weeks Sept July ? Absent for 4 weeks

90% attendance over 5 years of primary school…. Equivalent to ½ a school year missed! Sept July Y2 Y3 Y4 ½ a year absent from school Y5 Y6

What impact might this have on Simon’s life……? Research suggests that 17 missed school days a year equals 1 GCSE grade DROP in achievement. The greater the attendance the greater the achievement.

Percentage Attendance: Weekly 90% Attendance = ½ day missed per week... 80% Attendance = 1 day missed per week... 70% = 1 ½ days 60% = 2 days 50% = 2 ½ days

Percentage Attendance Effect Termly & Yearly Amount of School Missed: Per Term Per Year 90% Attendance = 1 week 2 days = 4 weeks 80% Attendance = 2 weeks 4 days = 8 weeks 70% Attendance = 4 weeks 1 day = 12 weeks 60% Attendance = 5 weeks 3 days = 16 weeks 50% Attendance = 7 weeks = 20 weeks

Percentage Attendance – the amount of school you would miss by the end of Yr6: 90% attendance = 20 weeks= 1 ½ TERMS MISSED 80% attendance = 40 weeks = 1YEAR MISSED 70% attendance = 60 weeks= 1 ½ YEARS MISSED 60% attendance = 80 weeks= 2 YEARS MISSED 50% attendance = 100 weeks= 2 ½ YEARS MISSED

So 90% is not as good as it first seemed. What can do as a parent to increase my child's attendance? I

Ways for parents to encourage attendance: Talk regularly with your child about school and how they feel about it. More likely to attend if they feel supported and anxieties listened to.

Ways for parents to encourage attendance: Phone us as soon as possible to tell us why your child is absent, and when you expect them to return. Putting the school number in your phone can save you time. Know the school routine for alerting you to absence. Avoid taking holidays in school time. Only grant days at home for genuine illness. (you will know!!)

Ways for parents to encourage attendance: Know routines of the school day to avoid issues, e.g. have they got their PE kit? If you have concerns ring us – we will be discreet in trying to solve any issues or problems. PRAISE AND REWARD GOOD ATTENDANCE: even small successes, e.g. going in promptly, even when first lesson is their worst!

Other tips to help secure good attendance: Talk to us to resolve issues. We maybe able to help and support you and your child. We are here to help get the best out of every pupil. You are not alone.

Other tips to help secure good attendance: Be particularly watchful and supportive in the run up to tests or lessons that your child worries about – is there a pattern to that ‘bad belly’? Help them catch up with missed work, missed day doesn’t mean missed work. Remember PRAISE for good attendance.

Ways for your parents to encourage attendance: Phone us as soon as possible to tell us why your child is absent, and when you expect them to return. Putting the school number in your phone can save you time. Know the school routine for alerting you to absence. Only allow days at home for genuine illness. (you will know!!) DO NOT taking holidays in school time.

Attend and Achieve! If a school can improve attendance by 1%, they will see a 5-6% improvement in attainment. (Department for Education and Skills) Please help us and your child by ensuring their attendance remains above 95%, allowing them to achieve their potential.

Every Lesson Counts….
