Beyond the Training Program: A School Counseling Career CHAPTER 12

GOALS To offer suggestions for enhancing the professional identity and wellbeing of school counselors and discuss future prospects for school counselors.

Beyond THE TRAINING PROGRAM Keeping motivated Avoid burnout, a widely used label for a broad range of symptoms leading to losing the interest or competence to perform one’s job effectively Be proactive

KEEPING MOTIVATED Cognitive health Physical health Healthy interactions Reasonable workload Enhanced competence

KEEPING CURRENT Self-renewal from two perspectives: First perspective: defines self-renewal as updating and streamlining previously acquired skills and knowledge to ensure that one knows what has been learned and adds new ideas to old approaches. Second perspective: counselors can use self-renewal to acquire techniques, ideas, and skills they never had before, making them even more versatile.

REFLECTION Examine your views about school counseling when you decided to enter into this profession. How does that view compare and contrast to what you have learned thus far? Reflect upon the importance of advocating for your role. How might you accomplish this when you interview for your first school counseling position?

APPLICATION TO TECHNOLOGY If you have been building the components of your professional website, go live and continue to add content as you move through your preparation program. Create a business card that includes a link to your professional website. Be sure to share this business card when you interview for potential jobs or are searching for an internship site.
