Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, Blessed Trinity!

All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns Around the glassy sea;

Falling down before Thee, Cherubim and seraphim Falling down before Thee, Which wert and art And evermore shalt be.

Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;

There is none beside Thee, Perfect in power, In love and purity. Only Thou art holy - There is none beside Thee, Perfect in power, In love and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name In earth and sky and sea;

Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, Blessed Trinity!

I need Thee, O I need Thee; Every hour I need Thee! O Bless me now, My Savior I come to Thee

Temptations lose their power I need Thee every hour, Stay Thou nearby; Temptations lose their power When Thou art nigh.

I need Thee, O I need Thee; Every hour I need Thee! O Bless me now, My Savior I come to Thee

I need Thee every hour, In joy or pain; Come quickly and abide, Or life is vain.

I need Thee, O I need Thee; Every hour I need Thee! O Bless me now, My Savior I come to Thee

I need Thee every hour, Most Holy One; O make me Thine indeed, Thou blessed Son!

I need Thee, O I need Thee; Every hour I need Thee! O Bless me now, My Savior I come to Thee

Teaching & Miracles Luke 4:31-44, Mark 1:21-39, Matthew 8:14-24 Diseases afflict mankind as a result of the curse of sin In the first century, diseases were often incurable, life spans were short, and demonic activity was rampant Jesus’ power to cast out demons and heal every kind of disease confirmed His authority to teach

Teaching & Miracles Luke 4:31-44, Mark 1:21-39, Matthew 8:14-24 Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 9:1-2 by moving to Capernaum and bringing light to a dark place Jesus invited Andrew, Peter, James and John to follow Him and become fishers of men

Authority to Teach Luke 4:31-32; Mark 1:21-22 Jesus’ manner of teaching with authority was in contrast to the way in which the scribes would teach Jesus taught with authority in other places, but it is the first recorded response of the people being amazed

Authority to Teach Luke 4:31-32; Mark 1:21-22 They were amazed that a man without credentials could teach in such a manner People still confuse having credentials with being qualified to teach They were astonished that Jesus taught by His own authority instead of quoting others for authority

Authority to Teach Luke 4:31-32; Mark 1:21-22 Even today, Rabbis, pastors and scholars often quote others to gain authority for what they teach The authority for what a pastor teaches should be the Bible, not the opinions of men

Authority to Teach Luke 4:31-32; Mark 1:21-22 Quoting others is proper in order to give credit or add the understanding of an expert to your argument A mere human that would teach as Jesus did would be considered an egotistical megalomaniac

Authority to Cast out Demons Luke 4:33-37; Mark 23-28 Jesus demonstrates His authority for teaching those in the synagogue by His authority to cast out the demon e[cw / exō - the man has a demon in a spatial sense, not possessed by it in a legal sense (owned) Man himself is responsible to God for all his actions, not any demon

Authority to Cast out Demons Luke 4:33-37; Mark 23-28 Demonic influence is usually from without - such as upon Peter or Judas prior to His betrayal of Jesus Humans are volitional and so always have a choice, but demons can influence to the point they indwell

Authority to Cast out Demons Luke 4:33-37; Mark 23-28 This demon is “unclean” because it has influenced the man to become ceremonial unclean Scriptures cite demonization as the cause of many specific cases of physical and mental problems

Authority to Cast out Demons Luke 4:33-37; Mark 23-28 Luke 4:34 - The demon recognizes Jesus and cries out loudly The demon speaks though the man for himself and the man (a mixture of singular and plural pronouns) The demon fears being destroyed early - Matthew 25:41; 2 Peter 2:4

Authority to Cast out Demons Luke 4:33-37; Mark 23-28 The demon is wrong for Jesus does have business with the man - He has come to seek and save the lost Jesus does not need or want demons to proclaim His identity to the world

Authority to Cast out Demons Luke 4:33-37; Mark 23-28 The demon must obey Jesus, and so throws the man down in convulsions and then comes out with a loud cry The people are shocked that Jesus has the authority to cast the demon out with just a word

Authority to Heal Matthew 8:14-17; Mark 1:29-34; Luke 4:38-41 Peter’s mother-in-law is very sick Peter was married both then & over 25 years later when his believing wife is traveling with him (1 Cor. 9:5) Singleness has some advantages in ministry (1 Cor. 7), but it is a doctrine of demons to forbid it (2 Tim. 4)

Authority to Heal Matthew 8:14-17; Mark 1:29-34; Luke 4:38-41 Jesus is asked to see her, He rebukes the fever, raises her up by the hand, the fever leaves & she serves them The immediate return to service demonstrated Jesus authority to instantly heal the sickness

Authority to Be Compassionate Luke 4:40-44; Mark 1:32-39; Matthew 8:16-17 Mark 1:33 - the “whole city had gathered at the door” after sunset (end of Sabbath) with people to be healed At that time, sickness was not just inconvenient, it was often life threatening with few cures

Authority to Be Compassionate Luke 4:40-44; Mark 1:32-39; Matthew 8:16-17 Jesus laid His hands on each sick person - a physical touch of compassion Those demonized were healed and the demons cast out Matthew 8:17 - the healings were a fulfillment of Isaiah 53:4 - a glimpse of His future kingdom

Authority to Be Compassionate Luke 4:40-44; Mark 1:32-39; Matthew 8:16-17 Jesus healed people until late, then got up before sunrise to find a lonely place to pray Jesus came to preach the gospel, so He determined that He would go to other towns to minister

Conclusion Jesus’ deity gave Him authority to teach which was authenticated by healings and casting out demons While you cannot heal or cast or demons as Jesus did, you can proclaim His teachings and be compassionate

He giveth more grace when The burdens grow greater; Annie Johnson Flint / Hubert Mitchell / Aaron Williams © 1951, 1969 Lillenas Publishing Co. ARR UBP – CCLI License No. 378119

He sendeth more strength When the labors increase.

To added affliction He addeth His mercy;

To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.

His grace has no measure. His love has no limit; His grace has no measure.

His power has no boundary Known unto men.

Riches in Jesus, He giveth, And giveth, and giveth again! For out of His infinite Riches in Jesus, He giveth, And giveth, and giveth again!

When we have exhausted Our store of endurance,

When our strength has failed Ere the day is half done,

Our Father’s full giving When we reach the end of Our hoarded resources, Our Father’s full giving is only begun.

His grace has no measure. His love has no limit; His grace has no measure.

His power has no boundary Known unto men.

Riches in Jesus, He giveth, And giveth, and giveth again! For out of His infinite Riches in Jesus, He giveth, And giveth, and giveth again!
