FORESHADOWING A literary device in which the author drops subtle hints about what’s going to happen in the story/movie. Example: a.) dreams about fire b.) There is a fire at the end of the story.

FLASHBACK A literary device in which the author interrupts a scene to take you back to a past event. Example: a.) Forrest Gump b.) He has flashbacks to the Vietnam War.

SYMBOL A literary device used when a word, place, character, or object means something beyond what is literal. FOR EXAMPLE- A stop sign. What literary is it??? It is a metal octagon painted red with white streaks. What is its symbolic meaning? When you see it, you must STOP!
