Towards More Sustainable Mobility in Nablus City, Palestine

Introduction Sustainability :is the ability to continue a defined behavior indefinitely. It contains : Environmental sustainability : is the ability to maintain rates of renewable resource harvest, pollution creation, and non-renewable resource depletion that can be continued indefinitely. Economic sustainability :  is the ability to support a defined level of economic production indefinitely Social sustainability : is the ability of a social system, such as a country, to function at a defined level of social well being indefinitely.

Introduction : Sustainable Mobility : Sustainable mobility depends on the concept of moving freely without sacrificing other elements such as human, environment and economy . Environmentally : sustainable system aims to reduce emissions such as CO2 and aims to reduce noise pollution due to traffic. Economically : sustainable system aims to exploit the different resources particularly human resources and financial resources. Socially; sustainable system aims to meet the requirement of the users.

Venn Diagram of sustainable mobility

Problem Definition : It is believed the current T.S in Nablus is facing real problems in terms of sustainability, particularly environmental, social, and economical issues. The first and essential problem is "the environment". The current T.S contributes in Co2 emissions and pollutes the environment. The social problems : the T.S may not be reliable and it has limited serviceability. Also it doesn’t satisfy citizen's needs like safety and efficiency Economic problems, it costs the government a lot and the return may not be worth while

The Expected Sustainable Mobility Indicators 1) Environmentally: a) Sound pollution. b) CO2 emission. c) Fuel consumption 2) Socially: a) Safety. b) Comfort ability. c) Services levels. d) Delay. e) Accessibility. f) Ability to use non-motorized moods. 3) Economy: a) Expenditures. b) Investment . …etc.

Methodology Literature review. Data collection. Traffic count studies. Speed Study. Official Statistics of the number of vehicles, the population, the densities, percentage of land used as roadways. Accidents numbers and safety conditions. Questionnaire.

Data Type : Traffic count studies : this study has been done by counting vehicles with their movement to determine the peak hour, peak hourly volume. Speed Study : the data was collected on (24/11/2015) and it is done by using the radar instrument. Official Statistics : the official Statistics of the number of vehicles, the population, the densities, percentage of land used as roadways has been taken basically from the (Palestinian Central Bureau of statistics). Accidents and safety conditions : the accidents occurred in the study area, has been taken into consideration. This data has been collected for the years 2014 and 2015, the accidents are up to Sept 2015 and it is collected from (Police Station). Questionnaire : a pilot study has been made. However, the result still under processing.

Data Collection and analysis : Traffic volume analysis   West East East west Street Name PHF Peak hour Peak Volume 0.84 7.30-8.30 a.m. 1093 2.45-3.45 p.m. 776 Haifa street (west- Tunis) 0.9 7.15-8.15 a.m. 1988 2039 Faisal street (Police station) 2.30-3.30 p.m. 810 0.93 3.00-4.00 p.m. 808 Al-Quds street 1063 0.8 832 Rfeedia street(Tunis)

Data Collection and analysis : Safety analysis

Data Collection and analysis : Environmental analysis Air pollution : in Nablus city there are about 20,397 vehicles which contribute about 16.8 % of West Bank (Palestinian Central Bureau of statistics, 2010).

Data Collection and analysis : Environmental analysis Table shows the amount of CO2 resulting from one ton of fuel Fuel type Ton CO2 per ton fuel Gasoline 3.047 Kerosene 3.107 Diesel 3.149

Data Collection and analysis : Environmental analysis Preliminary investigation of noise pollution Ldn = 31.0+10.2 log {ADDT+%T*ADDT/ 20} - 13.9 log D +0.13S   Where: Ldn: the equivalent sound level during 24 hours period in (dBA). ADDT: Annual average daily traffic in (vehicles/day). %T: Average percentage of trucks during a typical day. D: Distance from edge of pavement to receiver in (m). S: Average speed of traffic flow during one hour (km/hr.).

Data Collection and analysis : Table shows AADT of study area (east west direction) Street Name Peak hour volume K factor AADT Haifa Street (west- Tunis) 776 10% 7760 Haifa Street (east-Al salam mosque) 834 8340 Faisal Street (Al-watani) 1837 8% 18370 Faisal Street (police station) 2039 20390 Al-Quds Street 808 8080 Rfeedia Street (Tunis) 832 8320 Rfeedia Street (badawi)

Data Collection and analysis : Environmental analysis Sample Calculation for Faisal Street (police station). Ldn = 31.0+10.2 log {20390+0.024* 25488/ 20} - 13.9 log 1 +0.13*22.67=79.8 dBA AADT = 2039/8% =24588 % Of Truck = 2.4% D = 1 m Avg. speed = 22.76 km/hr

Conclusion The sustainable ideas are still not clear. The purpose of the second semester is to develop and improve these ideas and to evaluate the existing indicators and their performance. It is also expected that a model is needed to be found so that it can be possible to evaluate and design a sustainable system. It is expected that various assumptions will be made specially when required data is not attainable This is the first local study related to sustainable transport; therefore, it is expected to pave the road for future advanced work in this area.
