SOME SLAVES WERE GIVEN AS GIFTS TO TRADING PARTNERS !

TRADERS OFTEN EXCHANGED GOLD, SALT AND SLAVES Slaves were considered to be transferable goods like land, money, or silk!

HOW DID AFRICANS TREAT THEIR SLAVES? Slaves were treated like family members and cared for very well. Slaves were viewed as valuable servants often loved. Slaves could be freed by their owners if they saw fit. Many slaves inherited their master’s property after the master died. Educated slaves often earned their freedom by proving their intelligence.

Africans trade with Europe Portuguese explorers are the 1st Europeans to acquire slaves from Western Africa. Coastal Africans captured Africans who lived inland and sold them to traders from Europe. Shortage of labor in the European colonies in the Americas caused a rise in the need for African slaves.

TRIANGULAR SLAVE TRADE AFRICAN SLAVE TRADERS DESPERATELY WANTED GUNS FROM THE EUROPEANS EUROPEANS DESIRED COTTON, TOBACCO, SUGAR AND MOLASSAS FOR MAKING RUM FROM AMERICA AND THE CARIBEAN COLONIES. AMERICA COULD NOT PRODUCE ENOUGH OF THESE GOODS WITHOUT AN INCREASED LABOR FORCE.

TRIANGULAR SLAVE TRADE HOW DID THEY ALL GET WHAT THEY WANTED ? 1. EUROPEANS TRADED GUNS WITH AFRICA 2. SLAVES WERE SHIPPED ACROSS THE ATLANTIC OCEAN TO THE LABOR SHORT AMERICA. 3. AMERICAN COLONIES USED SLAVES TO PRODUCE THE COTTON, TOBACCO AND MOLASSAS FOR RUM THE EUROPEANS CRAVED!

The Middle Passage The Middle Passage from Western Africa across the Atlantic Ocean was long and dangerous! Many slaves contracted diseases from the European traders they were not used to. Slaves starved or dehydrated and died European traders lost ½ their “ merchandise “ by the time the reached their destination. Lost money and time!!

How did they know which slaves were going where and to whom? OWNER’S BRAND

EUROPEAN TRADERS INCREASED THEIR PROFITS BY PACKING EVERY AVAILABLE SPACE ON THE SHIP WITH SLAVES .

MAXIMUM CAPACITY

What Impact did African slavery have on the world? Economically made African coastal people wealthier than inland African tribes. Coastal Africans have guns to further subjugate inland tribes. The Southern American colonies became dependant on slaves for labor on plantations. Black men and women were seen as property and not considered human-beings.
