Summer Reading Program Monroeville Schools 2016

Overview: Grades 1-8 Reading program was developed to encourage student to keep reading on-level books independently over the summer. Student that scored below 20% on Spring 2016 MAP testing in grades 1-8 were invited (approx 40) to seven two-hour sessions. Each session included: a book swap (10 books), small group literacy- based activities, games, creative reading, plays, paired reading (younger student with older student), and 30 minutes of silent reading. Students received book bag, reading log challenge, and weekly prizes. Parents received helpful information and language-building activity ideas to assist their child/children with reading.

Attendance Overall each session had approx. 10-13 students attend (vacations, parent work schedules, CAVS parade  affected attendance through the summer) Grade 1: 2 students Grade 2: 3 students Grade 3: 3 students Grade 4: 3 students Grade 5: 3 students Grade 6: 2 students Grade 7: 2 students Grade 8: 1 student

Book Circulation Each student chose on-level books to take home and read and return the following session. Depending on their reading level students could chose between 3 and 10 books. Approx. 100 books were circulated each session At the end of the program 100 books were given to students to keep. Books were hand selected by the student.

Overview: Kindergarten Storytime Storytime program was developed to encourage a love of reading and help students become familiar with the school. All students registered for kindergarten at the end of May were invited (27). Students were required to be accompanied by an adult. On average 9 students attended on a regular basis (along with siblings that often participated too). 13 students came on the last day. Each session included a read aloud story and clues about the story, crafts, and prizes.

Storytime Attendance & Book Circulation Storytime average about 9 students per session. A couple session had less and the most we had attend was 13. Students picked out 4 read-to-me books and brought those home each week At the end of the program each student kept 5 books of choice. A total of 65 were given.

Recommend to Continue Program: all said yes All said they spend more time reading, talking about books, will use the library more, and are more aware of good books to share with their child All agreed or strongly agreed the storytime presenter chose fun & interesting books and activietes that the children enjoyed, and explained and modeled literacy concepts during the acitivites.

End of Program Celebration Students and families were invited to attend a celebration for participating in the program. Students received a pizza party, reading certificate, and tons of prizes. Many local businesses donated prizes and gift certificates as well.
