Resource Sharing Committee Chair: Diane Smith, George Mason University The committee has been investigating Tipasa and talking with OCLC about the move from ILLiad. Many libraries are turning to commercial vendors to acquire articles from new or embargoed journals. The committee has been investigating if there are journal titles that VIVA libraries should subscribe to individually to fulfill requests for all within the state.

VIVA won an award! VIVA was recently awarded the Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative 2017 Innovation Award for its whole ebook ILL lending program! Thank you to the task force that developed the best practices for whole ebook lending. VIVA ILL 1996-2016 2,183,499 Total Loans!

Cooperative Borrowing Program Allows students, faculty, and staff at VIVA institutions to borrow materials on-site at any of the 43 participating institutions. Roanoke College and Randolph-Macon College just joined! A map of the participating institutions is available on the VIVA website.

Steering Committee Chair: Steve Helm, Radford University Last year, VIVA joined the Open Textbook Network as a System Member. This initiative grew out of an RSC Task Force on Open Educational Resources. Last year, there were: 37 workshops with a number of the workshops serving multiple institutions. 358 faculty attendees from 25 Virginia colleges and universities. 85 faculty reviews of open textbooks with more expected. 7 course adoptions for over 150 students with more expected.

Open Textbook Network When asked how likely they were to adopt an open textbook after the workshop, 75% of the faculty members who completed reviews said yes, 23% said they were undecided, and only 2% said no. The Steering Committee has authorized an additional $20,000 for faculty review support for FY18 through FY21. Each institution will be allocated five faculty reviews up to 20 participating institutions per year.

Zepheira/Atlas Systems Linked Data Pilot VIVA is partnering with Zepheira and Atlas Systems to conduct a Linked Data pilot. There were three webinars about the Library.Link network attended by 69 people. During the pilot, over 48,000 records representing the special collections content of seven institutions (LVA, CWM, GMU, JMU, UVA, VCU, and VT) were converted into Linked Data and loaded into the Library.Link network.

Zepheira/Atlas Systems Linked Data Pilot These collections are now not only discoverable from search engines, but they also have their own Internet location that guides people back to the institution.

Collections Committee Chair: Sharon Gasser, James Madison University VIVA has a pilot of Kanopy Streaming Media underway – its continuance will be determined at the Steering Committee meeting on July 25th. Titles are available for the four, new ebook plans with whole ebook lending: Brill (initial purchase of 200 books) University Press Scholarship Online (initial purchase of 740 books over the next year) Taylor & Francis (initial evidence-based plan of 8,000 titles) Wiley (usage-based plan of over 19,000 titles)

RFP for Multidisciplinary Databases An RFP for Multidisciplinary Databases is underway; the current relevant contract for the EBSCOhost collection expires June 30, 2018. Please remember that you cannot discuss this RFP with any vendors while it is active. Committee members representing VIVA institutions are: Beth Blanton-Kent (UVA, Chair), Georgie Donovan (CWM), Accacia Mullen (BRCC), Crystal Newell (PVCC), Shaunna Hunter (Hampden-Sydney).

Resource Cancellations VIVA received a 5% budget cut for both FY17 and FY18. This resulted in the cancellation of a number of shared resources. The cancellation decisions were based on VIVA’s Cancellation Guidelines, the work of the Value Metric Task Force, and standard metrics such as cost per use and levels of use across VIVA. ACS Model Change VIVA is downgrading its shared All Publications subscription to a Science Essentials subscription for ACS Journals. Institutions that want a larger title package (Core Plus or All Pubs) must pay additional funds starting in FY18.

Outreach Committee Chair: Luke Vilelle, Hollins University The planned topic for the 2017 VIVA Users’ Group Meeting, taking place at the VLA Annual Conference in October, will be “Making Do: Innovating Amidst Budget Cuts.” The committee has created a 7.5 minute video to inform people new to VIVA what the consortium is all about.

New Top Ten List The Outreach Committee has developed a Top Ten list for ways to get involved with VIVA. http://vivalib.org/committees/outreach/top-ten-list.html

Featured Member Libraries There have been ten member libraries featured in a new initiative to highlight VIVA institutions.
