Magnetism Magnets exert forces on one another. Like electric forces they can attract and repel without touching. Electric charges produce electrical forces, magnetic poles produce magnetic forces.

Magnetism All magnets have a north and south pole. (north = north seeking pole, south = south seeking pole) Like poles repel, opposite poles attract Breaking a magnet in half will give you two magnets with north and south poles!

Magnetism Magnets will always come with both poles A magnet with one pole is called a mono- pole. Mono-poles DO NOT EXIST in nature…. Even breaking a magnet down to its atoms will not give you a mono-pole. This suggests atoms themselves are magnets.

Magnetism The space around a magnet, in which a magnetic force is exerted, is called a magnetic field. Magnetic fields are made from magnetic field lines that come out of the north pole and curve around to go into the south pole

Magnetism A magnetic field is produced by moving electrical charges. Magnetism is relative, so if you are in the same reference frame with any moving electrical charge, you will not see a magnetic field. Cool Mr. B, but how can bar magnets have magnetism if there is no charge moving in them?

Magnetism All atoms have magnetic fields, because electrons are moving around the nucleus, and they spin as they move. Both of these motions make a magnetic field. The magnetic field from spinning dominates over the magnetic field from moving around the nucleus in most atoms/materials. The magnetic field created from the electrons adds up if they spin in the same direction. The field is strongest in Iron, which is why it is so magnetic! It is weak in other materials, like plastic, wood, iphones, etc.
