Answer question 4 of the exam paper in the back of your books STARTER Answer question 4 of the exam paper in the back of your books Title: What is a healthy diet? What is our ‘metabolic rate?’ LO: To list the food groups in a balanced diet To measure the energy content of different foods

What are the six food groups? RECAP What are the six food groups? Hands up!

The amount of energy needed to raise 1g of water by 1OC Where are we now? What is a calorie? The amount of energy needed to raise 1g of water by 1OC

A calorimeter

Pasta contains 120 calories per 75g serving Challenge your brain! Raising a 100g mass in the air for 1 minute (this uses one joule (J) of energy) 1 J = O.2 calories How much pasta can I eat if I work out at the gym lifting 100g weights for 25 minutes? Pasta contains 120 calories per 75g serving

Challenge your brain! Raising a 100g mass in the air for 1 minute uses about one joule (J) of energy 1 J = O.2 calories How much pasta can I eat if I work out at the gym lifting 100g weights for 25 minutes? Pasta contains 120 calories per 75g serving 25 minutes = 25 Joules 25X0.2 = 5 calories 120/75 = 1.6 calories per gram 5/1.6 = 3.125grams of pasta! Looks like I might have to work a bit harder to eat a full meal!

Metabolic Rate: People can have different energy requirements because they have a different metabolic rate. Metabolic rate is the rate at which chemical reactions happen in the body.

Metabolic Rate: People with a higher metabolic rate: do more exercise (which increases muscle and has an effect on its own) have more muscle (men – sadly!) may have inherited it from their parents. So they can eat more!
