LARP Phase II Secondary Collimator RC1, ETC - Status 4/10/06 1.) Info needed from CERN 2.) Support of radiation damage tests 3.) Phase II Design Update 4.) New designer on board - progress LARP LHC PHASE II SECONDARY COLLIMATOR STATUS - E. Doyle 10 Apr. 2006 1/8
1) Info needed from CERN Components Note: received several requested items from AB this week. Some questions remain. 1.) items 12 - 14 on LHCTCS__0072 (linear bearing elements, no p/n) [can’t locate part #s sent by Alessandro on SKF website] 2.) items 29, 31, 34 & 35 on LHCTCS__0071 (spring, bearing & potentiometers - no manufacturer or p/n [#29 spring – need material; #31 bearing – AB sent OK; potentiometers now LVDTs – need details] 3.) the bellows, shown on LHCTCS__0018 and LHCTCS__0022 [ - AB sent OK] 4.) Resolver shown on LHCTCS__0071 but not identified [understand it’s not specified yet] 5.) Roller screw shown on LHCTCS__0082 [can’t find SKF # SVF 12x2 provided by AB, I find SVC] LARP LHC PHASE II SECONDARY COLLIMATOR STATUS - E. Doyle 10 Apr. 2006 2/8
1) Info needed from CERN In December we agreed to deal directly with CERN’s vendor for these parts: 1.) LHCTCS__0071 TABLE COLLIMATOR TCS ASSEMBLY: two complete sub assys or the parts to make them 2.) LHCTCS__0119 TABLE ANGULAR LIMITATION AXLE: qty 2 3.) LHCTCS__0120 SOCKET AXLE PLATE: qty 4 4.) LHCTCDI_0002 VAC CHAMB COLLIMATOR TCDI TANK WITHOUT TOP: qty 1, or parts to make one 5.) LHCTCDI_0007 TANK COLLIMATOR Y=TCDI TANK COVER: QTY 1 Items 1.) - 3.) are the most urgently needed. We’ve been unable to get contact information LARP LHC PHASE II SECONDARY COLLIMATOR STATUS - E. Doyle 10 Apr. 2006 3/8
1) Info needed from CERN Support stand drawings Before we can design central stop actuation mechanisms, etc, we need to know precisely what space is available. This is the immediate reason we need more detail (assembly drawings, individual part drawings) of the whole collimator assembled on support stands for each orientation. LARP LHC PHASE II SECONDARY COLLIMATOR STATUS - E. Doyle 10 Apr. 2006 4/8
2) Support of radiation damage tests OFE Cu and Glidcop Al-15 specimens machined at SLAC per Nick Simos drawings 1mm thick for tensile test, 3mm thick for CTE test Cu – annealed Glidcop – extruded, remove Cu cladding, half of specimens aligned with grain direction, half transverse to grain (anisotropic material) Completion: April 18 – 21 LARP LHC PHASE II SECONDARY COLLIMATOR STATUS - E. Doyle 10 Apr. 2006 5/8
3) Phase II Design Update Imagine SLAC rotatable jaws (880N) mounted to Phase I positioning mechanism (Phase I springs, etc.) with spring-connections at both ends Effective stepper pull-in torque 2.0 Nm => pull in force = 3800 N. Available force = 3800 N Force to support weight of jaw, etc = 1800 N Force available to resist jaw deflection = 2000 N Jaw deflection (1 hr beam lifetime) = 400 um - Force per end to nullify deflection = 18e3 N (~ 10X motor torque) - If no springs, stepper slips .18 rev - Springs sized to just prevent motor slip, static deflection (jaw weight) = 90 um LARP LHC PHASE II SECONDARY COLLIMATOR STATUS - E. Doyle 10 Apr. 2006 6/8
3) Phase II Design Update Transient (12 min beam lifetime) deflection = 1200 um - 3X more deflection to absorb or 3X more torque to resist it Q: Why not allow motor to slip, use resolver and LVDTs for feedback control? LARP LHC PHASE II SECONDARY COLLIMATOR STATUS - E. Doyle 10 Apr. 2006 7/8
4) New designer on board - progress 1.) Gene Anzalone – started Wednesday, April 4 orientation, safety training, etc modeled Phase I vacuum tank parts working on Ph I positioning mechanism 2.) Should we consider importing CERN models (IGES format…?)? LARP LHC PHASE II SECONDARY COLLIMATOR STATUS - E. Doyle 10 Apr. 2006 8/8
