Auditing the Annex: A Case Study of Campus Recycling Practices Elliot Frei, Troy Bennett, Qwynne Lackey, Lisa Meerts-Brandsma, Chris Zajchowski, & Dr. Kelly Bricker INTRODUCTION METHODS 10 separate audits were conducted in Wing C of the Annex Building, including the Café. Coordinated with FM on pick-up schedule. 2 recycling station 4-packs. 2 outdoor trash bins located at north and south entrances to building. PRT main office and computer lab. Recyclable material was hand separated and weighed using a hanging scale. The purpose of this project was to audit the current recycling and waste disposal practices of users in the Annex Building at the University of Utah. Utilizing the Annex as a case study, our goal was to better understand:   How much potentially recyclable waste is being collected? How much of that recyclable waste is being thrown away ? How much recyclable waste is being recycled? This project was conducted by the Parks, Recreation, and Tourism (PRT) Sustainability Committee. We appreciate the generous support of a Sustainable Campus Initiative Fund (SCIF) Micro-Grant. Results indicate that, over the course of 10 separate audits, there was an average of: 16.7 lbs of recyclable waste collected per audit run. Of this, 15.8 lbs of recyclable waste was in recycling bins 0.9 lbs of recyclable waste was in trash bins Results indicate a need for outdoor recycling bins to compliment outdoor trash bins. 2017 GCSC Research Symposium, University of Utah
