Animals and Scientific Method Review Ms. Angel’s Class

The Scientific Method Purpose Research Hypothesis Experiment Analysis Conclusion

Vertebrates Animals that have a backbone Examples include dogs, frogs, snakes, sharks, leopards, zebras, opossoms, birds, etc.

Invertebrates Animals that do not have a backbone Examples include crabs, butterflies, spiders, June Bugs, etc.

Arthropods The largest group of invertebrates Have legs with several joints. Examples include crabs, spiders, and ants etc.

What are some basic needs of animals? Food Water Climate Oxygen Shelter

What is an adaptation? a body part or behavior that helps an animal meet its needs in its environment. What are some body part adaptations?

What are some body covering adaptations? Fur Spikes Spines

What are some color/shape adaptations? Camouflage Mimicry

Camouflage an animal’s body color or pattern that helps it blend in with its surroundings. Ex. Snowshoe hare

Mimicry an adaptation in which an animal looks very much like another animal. Ex. Viceroy and monarch butterflies

What are behavior adaptations A behavior that an animal has, which allows it to survive in its environment. Can be learned or instinct.

Instinct A behavior adaptation that an animal is born with. Ex. Migration and hibernation

Migration Migration is when animals travel long distances to meet their needs. Ex. Monarch butterflies, and Snow Geese

Hibernation Hibernation is a period when an animal goes into a long, deep “sleep”. Ex. Bears and squirrels

Learned Behaviors Behaviors that an animal learns from other animals and experiences. Ex. Tiger cubs learning to hunt from their parents and Chimpanzees communicating.
