What is the NYSESLAT? New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test Questions are graded from 0 to 4 points Used as a placement test for 2017-2018 school year Perfect scores (4) will test out of ENL For all other scores, students remain in ENL

NYSESLAT ENL final that tests skills of each student based on grade level Requires different type of response based on grade level Brand new test layout Tests Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing skills

Five Performance Levels Entering Emerging Transitioning Expanding Commanding

Test sections Session 1: Speaking Session 2: Listening, reading, and writing Short Constructed Response Session 3: Listening, reading, and writing Short Constructed Response Session 4: Listening, reading, and writing Extended Constructed Response

Speaking Speaking answers differ based on grade level Full sentences Speak clearly and straight to the point Questions asked based on 5 levels Entering Emerging Transitioning Expanding Commanding

Speaking All speaking based on pictures that students see Emerging – What else does the boy do in these pictures? Transitioning – What is different about theses two pictures? Expanding – Can you explain why these two pictures are different? Commanding – After looking at these pictures, tell how this person has an effect on your life?

Speaking Entering – What else do you see in the picture? Transitioning – What is different about theses two pictures? Expanding – Can you explain why these two pictures are different?

Listening, reading, and writing Short constructed responses Writing answers differs based on grade level Kindergarten – Copying letters, words 2nd grade – Write small paragraphs using word box 5th grade – Short essay or a few paragraphs based on reading

Listening, reading, and writing Extended constructed response Differs based on grade level Kindergarten – Write full sentences 3rd grade – Complete a story writing about future events 5th grade – Full essay on previous reading

Scoring Rubrics for all test items, but each with different point totals Points can be 0 or 1, OR 0 to 4 0 – is no response or not in English 1 – uses some English words but not a strong answer 2 – all in English but missing some parts of the answer 3 – needs to improve minor parts, stronger vocabulary 4 – perfectly completed, used words pertaining to the subject
