Great Basin Public Health Leadership Institute Project Goals Through completion of the T-CAR, Utah’s American Indian Tribes will: Be better prepared to handle emergencies Prioritize training and planning Open doors for grants Build partnerships Great Basin Public Health Leadership Institute

Great Basin Public Health Leadership Institute Barriers to Success Establish and/or nurture relationships within our own agencies especially those who worked at some levels with Tribes The tremendous workload of our Tribal partners History of previously soured relationships Risk of further alienation if not done correctly Cultural and heritage sensitivity Tribal Sovereignty issues and sensitivity Great Basin Public Health Leadership Institute

Great Basin Public Health Leadership Institute Accomplishments Formalized the Utah Tribal Emergency Response Committee (UTERC) Formed a partnership for Tribal issues between DHS, DOH, and other agencies Assisted with Tribal considerations in Pandemic Influenza, Antiviral, Strategic National Stockpile (SNS), and other state and local plans Jerrianne Great Basin Public Health Leadership Institute

Leadership Lessons Learned Collaboration increases outcomes We accomplished more together than separately Using principles learned from the GBPHLI we were able to bridge critical communication gaps We were able to focus the passion we both had for the tribes to accomplish a common vision We had to re-examine and revise our goal; the T-CAR became secondary to nurturing good relationships Both Great Basin Public Health Leadership Institute

Our Work Does Not Stop Here We plan to continue working together for the benefit of Utah’s Tribes! Great Basin Public Health Leadership Institute
