2017 Memorial Day Conference North Stonington Bible Church Lesson #2: Peter’s Call Luke 5:1-11

Peter the Encourager Introduction Peter’s life provides an opportunity to watch the Master sculpt a masterpiece. God’s grace see us for what we can be when we allow His Word and the Holy Spirit to transform our character – Philippians 2:12-13. The sculpting of Peter began in John chapter one – John 1:35-42.

John 1:35-42 Faithful Brother Andrew told his brother Peter what he knew about Jesus. Andrew had a concern for his brother and wanted him to know the Truth. Andrew’s faithfulness to the Truth had an eternal impact not just on Peter but for the whole world.

Luke 5:1-11 Peter’s Call An unknown amount of time passed between Peter’s introduction to Jesus in John 1 to the call of Peter in Luke – 9 months to a year.

Luke 5:1-11 Peter’s Call Fishing was strenuous work including long hours and exposure to all types of weather. Fishing was a major industry in Galilee. They would drop their nets from the boat and catch fish as the nets fell. Fisherman were businessmen with employees.

Luke 5:1-11 Peter’s Call Vs. 1-3 – Floating Pulpit. Vs. 4-7 – Fantastic Catch. Vs. 8-11 – Fearful Peter.

Peter the Encourager Biblical Thoughts: We never know the eternal impact of our witness. Ignorance of the Word of God is not because of a lack of formal training but a lack of interest and commitment. Sometimes we must fail in our own power before we will see the need of God’s power.

New Testament Expressions for Walking “Walking in” – 1 John 1:6-7. Sphere of Light Sphere of Darkness

New Testament Expressions for Walking “Walking by” – Galatians 5:16, 25. Sphere of Light Sphere of Darkness

New Testament Expressions for Walking Walking “according to” – Romans 8:4. Sphere of Light Sphere of Darkness

New Testament Expressions for Walking Only in the sphere of Light does the Holy Spirit teach. Sphere of Light Sphere of Darkness

New Testament Expressions for Walking Only in the sphere of Light does the Holy Spirit teach. Sphere of Light Sphere of Darkness

Fruit Production The different walks produce different fruit. Sphere of Light Sphere of Darkness

Peter the Encourager Biblical Thoughts: Peter understood what it was like to walk after the pattern set by Jesus – 1 Peter 2:21. The same God that molded Simon into a rock of stability is the same God that molds us into the character of Christ – 1 Peter 2:5.
