Oil Spill Model Systems OILMAP Oil Spill Model Systems

OilMap Background

Provides rapid predictions of the movement of spilled oil Provides rapid predictions of the movement of spilled oil. The approach of OILMAP makes oil spill modeling accessible to both industry and those government agencies concerned in the transport and handling of oil. Provides an integrated GIS system that allows the user to display and manipulate point, line, and area data geographically referenced to the base map .

OILMAP 2D OILMAP2D tracks the movement of oil on the water surface . The source of an oil release can be a point, multiple points or a polygon, occurring instantaneously or continuous

OILMAP 3D OILMAP3D tracks both the surface and subsurface movement of oil Can incorporate response options (e.g. dispersant, mechanical removal and booming), as well as overflights / surface oil observations in model predictions. Results provide the oil’s distribution in various environmental compartments graphically on a map and in tabular form.

AIRMAP Is an atmospheric dispersion model that is integrated within OILMAP. The integration of AIRMAP provides concentrations of volatized hydrocarbons to determine exclusion zones due to atmospheric exposure. Using the parameters of an oil release, AIRMAP estimates the flux to the atmosphere from evaporation and volatilization and then calculates the time-varying atmospheric concentration of the release at various heights. Predicted air concentrations can be processed to determine time weighted averages that can be compared to explosive/flammable limits (UEL/LEL), as well as long or short term exposure concentrations.

OILMAP Data Needs Oil database (provided) Base map (provided) Wind data (EDS subscription grants access to local forecast wind data). Current data (EDS subscription grants access to local forecast wind data).

Oil Database The standard system OILMAP systems come preloaded with RPS ASA’s oil database. The user has the capability to add and edit oils within the oil database. Client specific oils can also be added to the database

Basemap (Coastline Data) The OILMAP model uses a geo-referenced GIS file that defines the coastline. RPS ASA will provide a global coastline data set, but user may use provide their own coastline GIS data. Typically a high resolution coastline will be developed for the region of interest. OILMAP can use a SHP file to defines the coastline.

Wind Data/Current Data A subscription to the Environmental Data Server (EDS) provides the user with access to forecast wind and current data. The user may also manually enter wind and current data. A details overview of the EDS is provided below.

Environmental Data Server (EDS) Environmental Data Server (EDS) has been implemented to operationally disseminate near-real-time data products, observations and forecasts. This on-line data provision is regularly being used, for example, by US Coast Guard in support of their Search & Rescue Missions. The Data Server collects and disseminates many different data products, some public and some private, and allows SAROPS users and other tools to simply specify the geographic region and time and the forecast data is automatically retrieved.

Environmental Data Server (EDS) This on-line data service, available 24/7 allows the user to obtain wind and currents forecasts up to date for the area of interest and for a particular time range: By means of the EDS Option in the Spill Wizard (model setup assistant), the user can request to the EDS the area of interest and the time range. The Server will send back the list of data products and providers for such area and time range. Once the user selects the data product, he/she receives back in less than a minute the dataset (winds, currents) that will be saved locally in the computer. Those files are ready to be used in the simulation.
