Learning outcomes Define the meaning and scope of e-business and e-commerce and their different elements Summarize the main reasons for adoption of e-commerce and e-business and barriers that may restrict adoption Outline the ongoing business challenges of managing e-business and e-commerce in an organization.

The impact of the electronic communications on traditional businesses Innovation in e-business is relentless, with the continuous introduction of new technologies, new business models and new communications approaches So all organizations have to review new electronic and Internet-based communications approaches for their potential to make their business more competitive and also manage ongoing risks such as security and performance

E-business All electronically mediated information exchanges, both within an organization and with external stakeholders supporting the range of business processes

E-commerce Buy-side e-commerce refers to transactions to procure resources needed by an organization from its suppliers Sell-side e-commerce refers to transactions involved with selling products to an organization’s customers

What is the difference between e-commerce and e-business? E-commerce is the exchange of information across electronic networks, at any stage in the supply chain, whether within an organization, between businesses, between businesses and consumers, or between the public and private sector, whether paid or unpaid E-commerce is facilitated by a range of digital technologies that enable electronic communications When evaluating the strategic impact of e-commerce on an organization, it is useful to identify opportunities for buy-side and sell-side e-commerce transactions

Intranets and extranets Intranet - A private network within a single company using Internet standards to enable employees to access and share information using web publishing technology Extranet - A service provided through Internet and web technology delivered by extending an intranet beyond a company to customers, suppliers and collaborator
