Origins of the Cold War

Yalta Conference Big Three met to discuss the end of the War. (Feb. 1945) Russia wanted Poland, GB wanted free elections for the rest of Europe, US wanted help with Japan. China/Mongolia, Go ahead with UN, and division of Germany. Declaration of Free Europe

Potsdam Conference Truman replaces Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill (who is also replaced later by Clement Attlee) July 1945 End of War in Germany, officially went through with division and divided Berlin as well. Start to lose trust in Stalin.

“I just have a hunch that Stalin is not (the) kind of a man,(who would go back on his promise)…I think that if I give him everything I possibly can and ask for nothing from him in return…he won't try to annex anything and will work with me for a world of democracy and peace." -Franklin D Roosevelt

“Poor Neville Chamberlain believed he could trust Hitler. He was wrong “Poor Neville Chamberlain believed he could trust Hitler. He was wrong. But I don't think I am wrong about Stalin." -Winston Churchill

Iron Curtain Speech -March 5, 1946 From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia, all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere, and all are subject in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and, in some cases, increasing measure of control from Moscow.

Truman Doctrine March 12, 1947 Pledge to contain Soviet threats in Greece and Turkey. Beginning of the policy of Containment. “it must be the policy of the United States to support free people who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures.” (Communism/Soviets)

Marshall Plan April 8, 1948-1952 Over $12 Billion paid to help rebuild Western Europe. Money offered to USSR and Eastern Bloc but it was refused. Britain, France, W. Germany were the biggest recipients. (18 European Countries Total)
