Physical Science Pick up the handouts on the front table!! Matter and Energy – Day 6 Materials Needed: Writing Utensil Folder Notebook

Day 6 Bell work: We will be using a thermometer and a hot plate today. Write down the safety rules that apply to these instruments and why they are necessary. Agenda: Answer Pre-Lab Questions Explanation of lab procedures Lab Wrap-up Be careful of the hot plate, put the power cord behind the hot plate and away from the edge of the desk. Be careful with thermometers and glass beakers. Students must alert the instructor of any accidents (i.e. the thermometer breaks).

Q: Order the states of matter from the most to the least organized particle arrangement. gas, liquid, solid liquid, gas, solid solid, liquid, gas solid, gas, liquid SC12.2.1.c.DOK.1

Mathematics Booster The mass of an object is 100 g. The volume is 20 ml. What is the density? Density Formula The formula for density is D = Mass Volume D = density M = mass V = volume

Greek/Latin Greek/Latin Meaning pro in front of, first a- not, without tom cut, incision -ide a thing connected with or belong to iso same

Objectives I will know the definition of a phase change and that temperature is constant during a phase change. I will be able to accurately read a thermometer, record data, and plot data on a graph.

A: Order the states of matter from the most to the least organized particle arrangement. gas, liquid, solid – Incorrect. Solid is more organized than gas and liquid. liquid, gas, solid – Incorrect. Solid is more organized than gas and liquid. solid, liquid, gas – Correct. solid, gas, liquid – Incorrect. Liquid is more organized than gas. SC12.2.1.c.DOK.1

Mathematics Booster Answer The mass of an object is 100 g. The volume is 20 ml. What is the density? Density Formula D = 100 g 20 ml D = 5g/ml

Phase Change Lab Answer the pre-lab questions on your worksheet. Work with your group to complete the lab and gather your data and graph your results. Answer the “Analyze and Conclude” questions for the next class period.

The temperature of a substance does not change during a phase change. Charactaristics of Phase Changes Temperature and Phase Changes One way to recognize a phase change is by measuring the temperature of a substance as it is heated or cooled. The temperature of a substance does not change during a phase change.

Change of Temperature Vs. Change of State Losing or Gaining Energy When most substances lose or gain energy, one of two things happens to the substance: its temperature changes or its state changes. The temperature of a substance is related to the speed of the substance’s particles. So, when the temperature of a substance changes, the speed of the particles also changes. But the temperature of a substance does not change until the change of state is complete.

Changing States of Matter
