The 1920s in Kenya Harry Thuku Kikuyu Harry Thuku founded the East Africa Association & encouraged his tribe to rebel 1922- Thuku was arrested by the British, starting popular protest British killed 25 people in the Nairobi Massacre Harry Thuku

1940s in Kenya Jomo Kenyatta 1944- Kenya African Union (a nationalist party) founded 1946- Jomo Kenyatta (a Kikuyu) returned to Kenya after 16 years in England & began campaigning for independence Jomo Kenyatta

Jomo Kenyatta and The Mau Mau (1940s cont.) Elected president of KAU Wanted peaceful rebellion, but other Kikuyu formed secret societies that planned to get independence any way they can, including independence Members of these societies (called the Mau Mau) murdered: 32 white civilians 167 police officers 1,819 Kikuyus who disagreed with these societies. In revenge, the British killed 11,503 Mau Mau Also put Kenyatta in jail even though he disagreed with the Mau Mau
