Unit Summary The students will learn about key events and people during the turbulent Civil Rights Era. Students will examine video, pictures, and primary source documents. Classroom blogs, written assignments, and groups interactive discussions will be utilized to facilitate learning.

CFQs Essential Question: Why is there intolerance in the world? Unit Question: What is meant by the term Civil Rights? Content Questions: Where were the various “hot spots” in the country regarding the movement Who were the influential people during this movement? How did the Brown v. Board of Education decision affect segregation?

Vision for Unit By creating this unit, I want to Try out new methods to make the study of Civil Rights exciting Empower my students to become more aware of issues in the community During this unit, I want my students to Understand how discrimination has affected our country Use technology to communicate with different audiences Learn about the effects of intolerance

Project Approaches As my students work on this project, they Will learn to utilize new technology Collaborate with peers View a video clip that will inspire provocative thought Share their learning with a real audience

21st Century Learning Students will develop higher-order and 21st century skills in this unit as they Use the Essential and Unit Questions to guide their analysis of the play to find themes that cross places and times Communicate their ideas to a community audience Reflect on their reading, writing, research, and thinking strategies, and modify and adapt them as necessary Use project assessments to self-assess their work and give feedback to their peers

Gauging Student Needs Assessments Use CFQs to learn Students’ ideas about what Civil Rights are Background knowledge of intolerance and discrimination Assess 21st Century skills Developing, implementing and communicating new ideas to others Using technology to communicate and collaborate with other students

Gauging Student Needs Assessments I can use the information from these assessments to: Focus on parts of the play that students have prior misconceptions about Plan activities in which they will answer their questions Students can use the information from these assessments to: Compare their questions to those in previous units Set goals for how they will adjust their reading style for this kind of literature
