The Advisors of Absalom

The Advisors of Absalom Those not on God’s side will sometimes prosper

2 Samuel 16:15-23 (NET Bible) 15 Now when Absalom and all the men of Israel arrived in Jerusalem, Ahithophel was with him. 16 When David’s friend Hushai the Arkite came to Absalom, Hushai said to him, “Long live the king! Long live the king!” 17 Absalom said to Hushai, “Do you call this loyalty to your friend? Why didn’t you go with your friend?” 18 Hushai replied to Absalom, “No, I will be loyal to the one whom the LORD, these people, and all the men of Israel have chosen. 19 Moreover, whom should I serve? Should it not be his son? Just as I served your father, so I will serve you.”

2 Samuel 16:15-23 (NET Bible) 20 Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, “Give us your advice. What should we do?” 21 Ahithophel replied to Absalom, “Have sex with your father’s concubines whom he left to care for the palace. All Israel will hear that you have made yourself repulsive to your father. Then your followers will be motivated to support you.” 22 So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and Absalom had sex with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel. 23 In those days Ahithophel’s advice was considered as valuable as a prophetic revelation. Both David and Absalom highly regarded the advice of Ahithophel.

The Advisors of Absalom David the king Hushai (12x) David’s friend Absalom the king’s son Ahithophel (18x) David’s former advisor Bathsheba’s grandfather

The Advisors of Absalom “Long live the king” “I will be loyal to the one whom the LORD, these people, and all the men of Israel have chosen.”

The Advisors of Absalom Hushai had served David as David’s loyal friend; he will now serve Absalom as David’s loyal friend.

2 Samuel 12:11-12 (NET Bible) 11 This is what the LORD says: ‘I am about to bring disaster on you from inside your own household! Right before your eyes I will take your wives and hand them over to your companion. He will have sexual relations with your wives in broad daylight! 12 Although you have acted in secret, I will do this thing before all Israel, and in broad daylight.’”

The Advisors of Absalom “David had had unlawful sexual relations with Ahithophel’s granddaughter at the royal palace in Jerusalem, though she was married to another; so now, unlawful sexual relations with David’s harem would take place at the same palace—only in this case the retributive act would be ten times greater than the original offense, and in public!” –NAC

The Advisors of Absalom Those not on God’s side will sometimes prosper Those on God’s side are often tested

2 Samuel 17:1-13 (NET Bible) 16:23 In those days Ahithophel’s advice was considered as valuable as a prophetic revelation. Both David and Absalom highly regarded the advice of Ahithophel. 17:1 Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me pick out twelve thousand men. Then I will go and pursue David this very night. 2 When I catch up with him he will be exhausted and worn out. I will rout him, and the entire army that is with him will flee. I will kill only the king 3 and will bring the entire army back to you. In exchange for the life of the man you are seeking, you will get back everyone. The entire army will return unharmed.” 4 This seemed like a good idea to Absalom and to all the leaders of Israel.

2 Samuel 17:1-13 (NET Bible) 5 But Absalom said, “Call for Hushai the Arkite, and let’s hear what he has to say.” 6 So Hushai came to Absalom. Absalom said to him, “Here is what Ahithophel has advised. Should we follow his advice? If not, what would you recommend?” 7 Hushai replied to Absalom, “Ahithophel’s advice is not sound this time.” 8 Hushai went on to say, “You know your father and his men – they are soldiers and are as dangerous as a bear out in the wild that has been robbed of her cubs. Your father is an experienced soldier; he will not stay overnight with the army. 9 At this very moment he is hiding out in one of the caves or in some other similar place. If it should turn out that he attacks our troops first, whoever hears about it will say, ‘Absalom’s army has been slaughtered!’

2 Samuel 17:1-13 (NET Bible) 10 If that happens even the bravest soldier – one who is lion-hearted – will virtually melt away. For all Israel knows that your father is a warrior and that those who are with him are brave. 11 My advice therefore is this: Let all Israel from Dan to Beer Sheba – in number like the sand by the sea! – be mustered to you, and you lead them personally into battle. 12 We will come against him wherever he happens to be found. We will descend on him like the dew falls on the ground. Neither he nor any of the men who are with him will be spared alive – not one of them! 13 If he regroups in a city, all Israel will take up ropes to that city and drag it down to the valley, so that not a single pebble will be left there!”

The Advisors of Absalom Ahithophel’s Advice Hurry up. Send few men. Stay behind as king. Kill only David.

The Advisors of Absalom “Ahithophel’s counsel for a military strategy against David was bold, simple, and likely to succeed. It incorporated three hallmarks of classic military strategy: use of overwhelming force, the element of surprise, and a narrowly focused objective.” –NAC

2 Samuel 17:4-6 (NET Bible) 4 This seemed like a good idea to Absalom and to all the leaders of Israel. 5 But Absalom said, “Call for Hushai the Arkite, and let’s hear what he has to say.” 6 So Hushai came to Absalom. Absalom said to him, “Here is what Ahithophel has advised. Should we follow his advice? If not, what would you recommend?”

The Advisors of Absalom Hushai’s Advice Slow down. Take many men. Go along as king. Kill David and any loyal to him. Ahithophel’s Advice Hurry up. Send few men. Stay behind as king. Kill only David.

The Advisors of Absalom “[Hushai’s counsel] simultaneously discredits Ahithophel, undermines Absalom’s confidence, magnifies the king’s worst fears, and buys David precious time to escape and regroup. In the end it lays the foundation for David’s return to Jerusalem.” –NAC

The Advisors of Absalom Whose counsel would you choose to follow?

The Advisors of Absalom Those not on God’s side will sometimes prosper Those on God’s side are often tested

The Advisors of Absalom Those not on God’s side will sometimes prosper Those on God’s side are often tested Those on God’s side will find God on theirs

2 Samuel 17:14, 23 (NET Bible) 14 Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Arkite sounds better than the advice of Ahithophel.” Now the LORD had decided to frustrate the sound advice of Ahithophel, so that the LORD could bring disaster on Absalom….23 When Ahithophel realized that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and returned to his house in his hometown. After setting his household in order, he hanged himself. So he died and was buried in the grave of his father.

The Advisors of Absalom Everyone in the story is hoping God is on their side.

The Advisors of Absalom According to David’s prayer in chapter fifteen, the Lord frustrated the counsel of Ahithophel, showing that God was on David’s side.

The Advisors of Absalom Are you on God’s side? Is He on yours? Have you trusted in Christ as your Savior? Do you confess your sins regularly? Do you seek to follow God’s will over your own? Are you growing in your relationship with God? Do you give unselfishly to God and others?

Romans 8:31-39 (NET Bible) If God is for us, who can be against us?....Who will separate us from the love of Christ?....I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor heavenly rulers, nor things that are present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
