Language Learning for Busy People Elementary: I Need A Coffee! These documents are private and confidential. Please do not distribute. .

Elementary ----- I Need A Coffee! Warm up: Opening chat--- 5 minutes Review previous lesson’s content ---5 minutes Check if your student has completed self-study of the lesson. The class activities are designed to help them practice the language from the lesson. Thus, it’s extremely important that they go over different sections of the lesson before class.

Class Activities Class Activities: (30-35 minutes) Objective: Today we’re taking a trip to the coffee shop! Do you know how to order your favorite latte or cup of coffee? Check out these words and phrases to help you place your order.

Dialogue ---- 5 minutes 1) Read the dialogue with the student, line by line. Switch roles after the first run. Pay attention to student’s pronunciation, give feedback and help when needed. --- 5 minutes

Key Vocabulary --- 5 minutes Tired Needs Bagel Latte Change Plain I would like a large __________ and he just wants a coffee. He likes to eat a __________ for breakfast almost every day. I worked a lot this week; I am very __________. Do you want a chocolate muffin or a _________ muffin? She __________ a cup of coffee every morning to wake up. Here is your ___________ from lunch earlier today.

Language Expansion ---- 15 minutes #1: “for here or to go” – You will usually be asked this question after you order at the counter. This is the mostly used phrase in the U.S. but it may vary slightly region to region. When they ask you this in a coffee shop, they also are trying to determine if they should serve your coffee in a paper or Styrofoam cup or in a glass mug. If you call to place an order, the phrase we use them is “take out” or, sometimes “carry out”.   #2: “going to run to…” – An informal phrase used to say that you are going to make a quick trip somewhere. It does not mean you will literally run to the store. It’s just that you intend to be fast and will return quickly.

Language Expansion #3: “if you don’t mind” – If you don’t mind is similar to “if it doesn’t cause you trouble” or “if it’s not a problem”. It is usually used when the request is quite ordinary but you could have some apprehension or even refuse to grant permission.   #4: “keep the change” – When someone says “keep the change”, it can often be referred to as a tip for someone’s service. In America, many people make their money from tips customers give them for the service they provide. However, in this dialogue, it’s one friend telling another friend to “keep the change”. Here, you are giving someone a little something extra for their effort or kind act. It can be another way to thank someone for a favor they did.

Cultural Takeaway ---- 5 minutes Ordering coffee is a new English language challenge that wasn’t even around 15 years ago for most of the world. Many English learners need to practice how to order at a café, especially because coffee shops are a common place to meet friends or have business meetings. The great thing about coffee shops is that the customer can make their order however they want! Want a certain kind of milk? Or a certain temperature? No problem. After today’s lesson, ordering your next latte should be easy! And don’t forget – the American way is that YOU are the customer. The cashier is paid to be patient and to understand exactly what you want.

Role Play --- 5 minutes Encourage your student to practice today’s vocabulary and phrases. Set up the scenario. You two are at a coffee shop. The student is the customer and the teacher is the café employee. Have the student order their favorite coffee at the counter. Be specific. Ask follow up questions. And be sure to practice today’s grammar rules too! Be sure to switch roles as well.

The End --- Review --- 5 minutes * Review today’s class. Encourage the student on where he/she did well; give feedback to where he/she needs to pay more attention. * Assign homework, i.e. the ‘Exercise’ part of today’s lesson. Student should complete it and submit it online. They will see an automatic score. * Have them listen to the dialogue again and see if their understanding has improved. * Remind students that they can save different vocabulary terms in the app or online and review them as flashcards. * Tell the student what the next lesson is.
