Week Two: Outlining Warmup: 1) Which Graphic Organizer style do you like better and why? (in at least two complete sentences). 2) You are absent! Oh no! Where can you find what we did in class? What are the steps to get caught up on the work you missed? A synonym for “steps” in this case would be “procedure” 3) What is the first thing you should do when you enter class? 4) Where do you put all completed work for this class? Above: Random teaching image. I’m imagining he’s giving her feedback on a killer outline. Week Two: Outlining Goals I can create a Roman Numeral Outline before I write. I can create a Graphic Organizer Outline before I write. I can share my outline with a peer to get feedback. I can give a peer meaningful positive and negative feedback.

Outline Practice Using the sample Roman Numeral outline I gave you: Write a sample topic. What do you imagine that person’s topic of the day was that lead them to create that outline? Write two (2) complete sentences saying WHY you came up with that answer. NEXT: Find a partner. Trade outlines with your partner. Each person should have two. You and your partner should choose which outline they think will create a better essay. Tell each other WHY. This can be done in the following format: I like this outline because it does _________ really well and because I like ______ idea. This one could be better because you don’t explain _______ topic well. You should add more details to answer “Why?” and “How?”

Essay Practice Choose one of your outlines to write an essay on. See if you can turn it into a good, coherent essay. Afterwards: Answer the following questions and say why or why not. Each answer should be three (3) complete sentences. Is it easier to write about a topic after you write an outline? Do you think it helps you organizer your thoughts better? Does this produce better essays than the freewriting we did after brainstorming last week? Will brainstorming and outlining help you write better essays in the future? Right: Roman numerals. I had to learn these in school. Did you? What number does MMXII equal?
