Advancing English for Business Students (Speaking & Writing) Two courses provided by English for Academic Study (SMLC) for post-graduate taught students at the ASBS

Advancing English for Business Students Course participants: Adam Smith Business School Postgraduate taught programme Language proficiency at IELTS 6.5 (overall) - with no sub-test less than 6 Course tutors: English for Academic Study (SMLC) Courses Credit bearing (10 credits each) Graduate Award Scheme

AE for Business Students (Speaking) Aims: To develop fluency in academic and professional contexts To develop vocabulary and understanding of business concepts To enable higher-level academic participation To prepare for professional interviews To develop greater understanding of current skills To consider ways of improving and strengthening skills

AE for Business Students (Speaking) Course work includes: Selecting and reading academic texts outside class Preparing for in-class discussions Producing and modifying CVs for job applications Preparing for job interviews Interacting in class and involving others Reflecting on class performance

AE for Business Students (Speaking) Course structure: 10 weeks over two semesters 2 x 1-hour sessions per week 5 weeks in semester 1 (from 18th September) - Focus on academic discussion 5 weeks in semester 2 (from 19th February) - Focus on interview skills Course assessment: Weekly reflective writing Discussion skills Interview skills

AE for Business Students (Writing) Aims: Develop proficiency in the use of varieties of written Business English particular to professional business contexts Develop knowledge of relevant written text types as inter-connected components of business communication Provide structured opportunities for students to develop the practical skills needed to interact with and produce these written genres

AE for Business Students (Writing) Simulation Genres Collaborate Solutions Respond Approach Simply Psychology (2016) (A: business problem) B: text analysis C: solution & text output D: feedback E: feedforward (in class – out of class) You will be required to refer to texts and learning from your core programmes to successfully complete the weekly writing task. Genre and TTT approach with elements of problem based learning to understand Business texts.

AE for Business Students (Writing) Outcomes Write a defined range of business texts showing an understanding of genre features including organisational structure, vocabulary and register Identify and use a range of Business English language as it functions in written business contexts Evaluate information from a variety of business texts to infer relevant details and establish intertextual relationships

AE for Business Students (Writing) Course structure: 10 weeks over two semesters 1 x 2-hour sessions per week 5 weeks in semester 1 (from 30th October) - Focus on texts related to business 5 weeks in semester 2 (from 8th January) - Focus on texts related to employability Course assessment: Two in-class assessment tasks, one at the end of each semester (40%) Complete a task resulting in a specific business text (60%)

Enrolment Register for the course via MyCampus, using course codes: 5019 for Speaking and/or 5021 for Writing Search using the Language Centre. No additional fees ASBS provide specific instructions at induction and on the pre-arrival pages about selecting slots that best suit your timetable
