Challenge yourself Ⅱ Being Honest 姜学高 王寿年 Wanzhou No.3 Senior School

Looking Ahead Talk about honesty and develop the virtue of being honest. Practice apologizing and responding to apologies. Write a letter of apology.

Vocabulary presentation What is “honesty”? Which of the following means “honesty” to you ? Give your own answer if none of them matches your definition. A. Never tell a lie. B. Be open to parents. C. Seldom tell lies. D. Never steal anything. My answer:

Vocabulary presentation Guess the meaning of each of the underlined words in the following paragraph. Tom is a postman. His job is to deliver letters which are kept in envelopes. Every day he goes along the same route to deliver letters. He has to be careful with the letters. If a letter slips out of his hand and gets dirty he feels guilty and will apologize to the receiver of the letter and often he will gain forgiveness. Without his delivery, we would have to go to the post office to get our letters by ourselves.

Prediction Arrange pictures in order according to what the students think. (On Page 57 of students’ book.) Suggested answer: 5 – 4 – 2 – 1 – 3

While reading Read through the article to decide which of the following statements tells the main idea. 1)A little boy once broke a window on an old woman’s house, but he never admitted his fault. 2) Two little boys broke a window on an old woman’s house, and they admitted their fault immediately. 3) A little boy once broke a window on an old woman’s house and admitted his fault, but the old woman didn’t forgive him. 4) A little boy once broke a window on an old woman’s house and the old woman didn’t forgive him because of his honesty.

While reading Step 2 Work in pairs and answer the following questions in complete sentences. 1. What did the boy do after he broke the window? 2. What did the boy try to do when he felt guilty? 3. Do you think the boy was honest or not ?Why? 4. How do you understand the underlined sentence in the text? 5. Why did the old lady say “I’m proud of you”? 6. What do you think of the boy?

While reading Step 3 Red the following quotations about honesty. Which one do you agree to? Give some example to support you ideas. A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on shoes. 真理不出门,谎言传千里。 No man has a good memory to make a successful liar. 骗子记忆好。

While reading Dare to be true: nothing can need a lie; a fault, which needs it most, grow two thereby. 要敢于面对现实;没有什么需要谎言,一个错误,它最需要谎言,因此会产生两个错误。 We tell lies when we are afraid… afraid of what we don’t know, afraid of what others will think, afraid of what will be found about us. But every time we tell a lie, the thing that we fear grows stronger. 当我们害怕时会撒谎: 害怕我们不知道的,害怕别人的看法,害怕别人知道我们的情况,但是我们每撒一次谎,我们害怕的事会变得更强大。

Post-reading Work in pairs to retell the story to each other. You may use the following words and expressions. throw rocks, run away, scared, uncomfortable, feel guilt, save money, surprised
