Mass & Volume Lab Using Excel!!! Importing data into Excel Creating a scatterplot Adding multiple sets of data on one graph Formatting your graph Adding Trendlines

Export class data into Excel Your homework was to plot mass vs. volume using 2 different measuring devices to help us see which is more accurate. Today we are going to plot mass vs. volume of the 2 different metals to see how their densities compare. Download the class set of data from my blog for today. Open it. You should be in Excel.

Creating a Graph from A Data TABLE At the top of your spreadsheet, click on the “Insert” tab. Find the “Charts” section and click on “Scatter”. A white box should appear on your spreadsheet. Right click on the white box, left click on “Select Data” A small grey window should pop up called “Select Data Source” Click the “Add” button on the left hand side. A smaller grey window should pop up called “Edit Series” Enter the “Series name” as Aluminum

Adding A Set of Data Now we need to define the x- and y-values for aluminum. Click on the “Select Range” button under the “Series X values” Another new “Edit Series” box should appear On your Excel spreadsheet, highlight ALL of the data that will go on the x-axis for aluminum (volume data) Click the “Select Range” button again. Click on the “Select Range” button under the “Series Y values” On your Excel spreadsheet, highlight ALL of the data that will go on the y-axis for aluminum (mass data) Click the “OK” button

Adding ANOTHER Set of Data Data points for aluminum should automatically show up on your graph. Follow the same steps to “Add” another “Series” (set of data) for the second metal. Name this series Brass. Click the “OK” button on the small grey window called “Select Data Source”

Formatting your Graph Under the Design tab, Find “Chart Layouts” Click “Quick Layout” Select “Layout 1” Double click on the different parts of your graph to change the formatting Ex: Double click on the X-axis values to: Change the minimum & maximum Change the scaling Ex: Double click on the “Axis Title” to name the axis (volume or mass)

Add a Trendline (Equation and R2) Right click on a data point for lead Select “Add trendline” Choose a “Linear” line Make sure your y-intercept is at 0.0 Select that you want to display “Equation on chart” and “R2 value on chart” Repeat steps 1-4 for aluminum You can also customize the name of each trendline if you want.
