Germany and the Soviet Union divide Poland between them. October 8, 1939: Germans establish a ghetto in Piotrków Trybunalski, Poland April 9, 1940-June 9, 1940 Germany invades Denmark and Norway. Denmark surrenders on the day of the attack; Norway holds out until June 9. July 10, 1940-October 31, 1940 The air war known as the Battle of Britain ends in defeat for Nazi Germany.

May 15, 1944: Germans begin the mass deportation of about 440,000 Jews from Hungary May 27, 1944 – Allies invade Biak Island, New Guinea June 6, 1944 British and U.S. troops successfully land on the Normandy beaches of France, opening a “Second Front” against the Germans. June 15/16 – The first bombing raid on Japan since the Doolittle raid of April 1942, as 47 B-29s based in Bengel, India, target the steel works at Yawata. August 1, 1944: Warsaw Polish uprising begins August 15, 1944 Allied forces land in southern France near Nice and advance rapidly towards the Rhine River to the northeast.
