Distance between places on a map Scale Distance between places on a map
TIW – use scale to calculate distances on a map SIC – effectively read and use a road map IKW – I can calculate distances in the road atlas with 80% accuracy
How to use scale 1. The math way: If 1”=25 miles, and the distance from point A to point B is 2”, how many miles is that? About how many miles would an inch and a half be? How many miles in 2&3/4 inch? 1” = 25 miles
How to use scale 2. The short cut…. Use the edge of your paper to copy the scale Move the scale along the designated route Add as you go (25, 50, 75, 100,….) Or count then multiply (1,2,3,4 then multiply by 25) Bend with the road
Hints and Tips Be sure to locate the correct scale for the map you are using! “As the crow flies” versus following the road Follow a straight edge Inset map Use dot of city Miles, not kilometers Use “clean” #s
