Land in the Southwest Changes Hands Spain ruled the Western and Southwestern parts of North America for centuries. Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821. Now Mexico included present day states of California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, and parts of Colorado and Utah.

Mexicans Migrate North The Mexican government established Ranchos in Alta California to encourage more people to settle there.

Mexican American War Most of Mexico’s northern lands were ceded to the United States in 1848, following just two years of battle in the Mexican American War.

Mexican American Culture Indians of the Desert Southwest and early Spanish settlers have influenced the west’s modern culture. Adobe architecture originated with the Anasazi.

Mexican American Culture Early American Indian farming techniques, such as irrigation, are still in use today. Many skills used by modern cowboys were first developed by vaqueros.

Mexican Immigrants The United States still has a strong influence of Mexican American culture because of the many immigrants from there. In 2000 in the U.S., the largest majority of immigrants from any country were from Mexico.
