This is a great opportunity for families with a 4th grader! September 20, 2016 Mrs. Martin’s Newsletter Social Studies: This week, students will be introduced to our first Informational text common core standard, 4.RI.1. This standard states that students are able to use details and examples from a text to explain and draw inferences. In class, we are practicing using the RACE to respond strategy to meet this standard (RACE = Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain). We will also be starting our next unit on the Native People of Washington State. While at home, have your student teach you about what they’re learning about the history of Washington. Upcoming Dates September 19th: September 20th: Otter talks, Emojis at lunch September 21st: ACE day September 22nd: Choir 7:45-8:30AM September 24th: Math: This week, students will practice writing numbers in various ways. By 4th grade, students should have flexibility with the different number forms. Traditional expanded form is 285 = 200 + 80 + 5. However, students should have opportunities to explore the idea that 285 could also be 28 tens plus 5 ones or 1 hundred, 18 tens, and 5 ones. Written form or “Number Name” is two hundred eighty-five. Students will also compare two multi-digit whole numbers using appropriate symbols. In addition to number sense, 4th graders are also working on their measurement skills. Over the next few weeks, students will be learn about both customary units of measure and the metric system. They will practice measuring and converting between units and will : Check it out! http://www.thenewstribune.com/outdoors/article99186742.html This is a great opportunity for families with a 4th grader! Reading: In reading this week, we will be focusing on articles about students who are giving back to their communities and discussing what being a leader looks like. Students will be asked to respond to short answer questions about their reading as well as write an essay about how they can help our community here at Saltar’s Point. This language arts project will be the first step students can take towards earning their Otter Badge! Make sure you ask your student about this at home. Writing: Students will review the writing process by writing a paragraph about what type of food they would be and why. They need to include a topic sentence, three supporting reasons, and a conclusion sentence. Specialist 9/19-9/22: PE 9/23: Music Wednesday: Library
