Pneumatic Systems

FLR. = Filter Regulator Lubricator Very important device Ensure regulator set at 90 PSI Silo aeration pad supply should be teed off between regulator and lubricator Replace Filter at regular cycles and ensure bottle is drained. Top up lubricator on a regular basis. More work = more lube.

Important notes Fix all air leaks on plant. Seals can be purchased for most cylinders and valves Leaks cost money Unnecessary loading on compressor Inconsistent air pressure causes inconsistent dosing Silo aeration pad pressure should have its own dry unlubricated supply at 8-12 PSI Quick exhaust valves used on all dosing gates Inching valves can be used on discharge gates along with flow regulators Feed air manifolds from both ends with airline large enough to feed all devices

Typical Air manifold

Not enough volume to feed manifold due to pipe size

Common single acting electrical solenoid valves

Flow diagram single 5/2 valve Flow Restriction Exhaust Ports Air Pressure

Quick Exhausts. Can be fitted to speed up action of gate. They allow exhaust air to vent to atmosphere rather than back through pipe and valve

Flow chart

Double acting ( Ended) 5/2 valves Two main types. ( Spring return to center position) All ports closed All ports open . Used for applications that need constant pressure on a cylinder to keep device in position. ( Very rare on concrete plants)

Flow Chart All ports closed allows no air to pass to cylinder and when either side is energized air will flow to cylinder until power is removed and then internal spring will return valve to center position All ports open allows air to pass to cylinder. Cylinder seals must be is perfect condition with no slight leaks otherwise cylinder will leak open and device will not stay in position.

Double ended 5/2 no return to center. Similar to main valve types except when one side is energized the valve will stay put in position until the other coil is energized. Can be used on diverter gates. Not an inching valve.

Hydraulic systems Typcially used on mixer gates Some plants have adapted the pumps to feed fill and scale gates. Have seen some overloaded pumps so oil is stolen from main device to feed secondary device. Ensure you have enough pressure /flow to operate all devices that work at the same time. Change filters and oil regularly Avoid running pumps when not required. Inspect hoses and fitting monthly High pressure can cause serious injury/death Valves similar to pneumatic. Exhaust ports return to tank
