What is Depression ? Depression is a common mental disorder, characterized by sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, feelings of tiredness and poor concentration (as per WHO).

Depression (DSM-IV,2000) Affective or mood symptoms (depressed mood & feelings of worthlessness or guilt) Behavioural symptoms (social withdrawal and agitation) Cognitive symptoms (problems in thinking include difficulty with concentration or making decisions) Somatic or physical symptoms (insomnia or hypersomnia )

Objectives of Present Study To check the mental health status of working people with special emphasis on depression To analyze which symptoms of depression are most prevalent To find out possible causative factors responsible for depression

Method of Study Survey Method: Random Survey Area : Societies of Sarthana Jakat Naka area, Nana Varachha, East zone urban area of Surat city Sample size : 20 subjects. Tools : (1) Beck Depression Inventory (2) Questionnaire Data was processed and analysed to derive error free results.

Tools for Study 1) Survey Sheet: for the general profile of the subjects 2) Beck Depression Inventory –II (BDI-II) : a revised version (1996). created by Aaron Beck (1961) a validated measure to determine severity, intensity & quantification of depression. it has incorporated key components of the DSM-IV-TR criteria for depression. symptoms severity rated from 0 to 3 on 21 items. the highest score can be 63 & lowest can be 0.

Study Sample 09 Bankers + 05 businessmen + 04 odd job workers + 02 teachers = 20 male respondents Most of them were Hindus while few were Jains All were physically health with no major health problems None had major social or economical crisis 01 was detected with Diabetes & 01 with cholesterol problem All had normal Blood pressures 02 were addicted, out of which 01 was cigarette smoker & another a tobacco chewer. Except one all were vegetarians Youngest subject was of 19 years & oldest was of 57 years of age.

Outcome of the Study - 5 All subjects showed at least 1-2 symptoms minimum. No significant difference in scores of BDI due to different occupation, or age In present study, lowest score noted was 1 & highest score was 25

Possible factors responsible for such state Constant public dealing Competition, Pressure, Insecurity & Stress Lifestyle Unable to share

Conclusion Mild to moderate Depression prevails in these subjects which goes unnoticed but can lead to more severe mental illness which can harm the person as well as his surroundings. Only timely education & awareness can make them self reliant to help themselves or go and seek help. Further in-depth research is needed. Appropriate health policies & strategies for intervention with reference to mental health are needed.
