Introduction The deployment of the wireless sensor network into the home of the subject is the final step in the process. The deployment phase involves the engineer having a high degree of contact with the subject The relationship between the engineer and the elder is a recurring theme in this chapter

Introduction The deployment of the WSN can be broken down into the following stages: Planning Testing Preinstall Installation Maintenance Teardown *The material in this chapter is informed by several real-world projects in which the authors were actively involved.

Planning The focus of the planning stage is to prepare for the installation of a single example of the network into a single home. The overall system architecture and components The specifics of the environment into which the installation will take place

Planning The plan should include: complete list Environmental sensor / actuator devices; Wearable devices; Portable devices; Aggregators; Servers(if any); Network interface (in any); Specification Description Floor plan Timescale Contact details for the subject

Testing It is crucial that all technology is fully tested before going on-site to carry out the install. The plan should include: On the bench; In the lab; In a friendly environment, such as the home of a team member; In a suitable built environment – Ethical Review and Labeling (similar in architecture and construction to the install location); With participant representative groups in their homes (this is referred to as premarket testing).

Testing On the bench; Focuses initially on the individual devices The devices may be prototypes made up of combinations of modules and test boards. The test plan consists of multiple test Typical test topics Radio functionality Power management Battery capacity Memory Actuator elements(lights, screens, LEDs) Sensor functionality(movement, temperature, etc)

Testing 2. Lab Testing A mock-up of a typical deployment environment should be used to carry out laboratory testing The object : to ensure that devices, and the system as a whole, Function as expected in an area approximately the same size and shape as a typical deployment location. The devices act this stage will typically be example PCBs

Testing 2. Lab Testing Key issues to test in the lab include: Communications between devices and aggregators, including radio range and interference effects; Data flow, storage, and management; The ability of the aggregator to handle multiple parallel streams of heterogeneous data; Monitoring and maintenance software Impact of furniture, human occupancy, and other features of the environment on the functionality of the system.

Testing 3. Friendly Environment Test A real-world(out of lab) deployment environment Purpose : to assess the system in a “real-world-like” environment over a protracted period. Long-term stability of hardware and software; Long-term communications and data capture functionality; Architectural and built environment factors, particularly in terms of their effect on radio communications and sensor function; Impact of furniture, microwave ovens, and other sources of radio waves(e.g., WiFi networks); Impact of heat, cold, humidity, and other environmental factors;

Testing 4. Ethical Review and Labeling At this stage, the technology is ready to be deployed outside the controlled environment, and to become “customer-facing” for the first time. Object : to apply medical ethics guide-line(FDA, EU, etc.) to the testing to ensure that the users who are involved in the testing will not exposed to harm

Testing 5. Premarket Testing The final stage of testing involves installing and running the entire system in the homes of a number of subjects. Object : to identify usage issues and technical issues that have not arisen in the laboratory or friendly environments. During premarket testing, the full deployment process, form planning to teardown, is carried out, just as it will be when the system is finally deployed in the field

Testing 6. Documentation All stages in the testing should be fully documented by the test team, and made available to the deployment teams on the project. These reports can act as FAQ list and as guidance to the deployment teams Note that when devices are replaced or modified during the course of the project, they should be fully tested before being installed.

Preinstall Before actually traveling to the home of the subject and installing the WSN The aim of this phase is to make the following phase as smooth as possible. Contact the subject and agree the data and time for installation. Build the entire hose WSN, include aggregator and sever, in the lab. And run it overnight before the installation Prepare an install pack, with the full set of technology, plus spares.

Installation Important factor : It is “customer facing” Introduce the team and remind the subject of recent contact. Discuss the ideal locations for sensors with the subject, and seek agreement on location. Locate and identify studs and other construction elements that impact on sensor location Agree on a location for the aggregator. Agree on the power supply Bear in mind the need for access for maintenance purpose Mark the locations of all elements with removable markers and agree on them with the subject. Install the device, aggregator, and so forth Verify that the WSN is operating as intended, using the online maintenance/monitoring software Check that data is being generated and collected as intended ..…

Maintenance It should also be monitored on an ongoing basis, in order to verify that it is functioning as planned. The us of maintenance software Issue-tracking software such as BugZilla or Mntis Should ensure that data is being collected, stored, and backed up according to plan.

Teardown To minimize the mess, noise, and impact of the removal process, and to leave the subject. Agree and adhere to the appointment Minimize time and impact of teardown process Ensure that décor is unaffected Provide subject with ongoing contact detail Explain whether/what other followup may occur Give opportunity for feedback
