Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Jonathan Edwards

Jonathan Edwards Was a Puritan preacher, philosopher, and theologian. Was born in a Connecticut Colony in 1703. Taught religious lessons through “fire and brimstone” sermons in churches. “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” - sermon

Jonathan Edwards, the pastor of a Congregational church in Northampton, Massachusetts, delivered this sermon in Enfield, Connecticut, on July 8, 1741. It was immediately acclaimed, and is now regarded as one of the most famous sermons in American history. Edwards’ sermon epitomizes the evangelical fervor of the Great Awakening of the 1730s. During the Great Awakening, rousing sermons and a more participatory style of worship revived what many considered to be flagging Puritan religious devotion

“Fire and Brimstone” Many Puritan preachers used a technique of preaching called “fire and brimstone.” “Fire and brimstone” – A style of public speaking where a preacher scares a crowd of religious individuals by discussing hell and the afterlife. Can you think of any modern examples of “fire and brimstone?”
