MALE DIAGRAM

SPERM CELL

External Male Organs Scrotum Loose sac of skin that surrounds the testes Regulates temperature of testes Testicles (Male sex glands) Produce sperm Epididymis Tubes located on back of each of the testes Stores sperm Penis Tubelike organ that functions for reproduction, sexual pleasure, and elimination of body waste

Internal Male Organs Vas deferens Tube that carries sperm Seminal Vesicle Gland that secretes sugary solution that mixes with sperm to aid in mobility Prostate Gland Gland that secretes an alkaline solution to sperm to decrease the acidity of the vagina Cowper’s Glands 2 pea-sized glands that open into urethra Secrete a lubricating fluid Urethra Tube that carries urine or semen

3 Glands that Make Semen Seminal Vesicles- secretes sugary solution to aid in mobility of sperm Prostate Gland- secretes alkaline solution to decrease acidity of the uterus Cowper’s Gland (bulbo-urethral glands)- secretes lubricating fluid

2 TUBES Urethra- brings urine or semen out of the body through the penis Vas deferens- tube that carries sperm from the testes

Terms Erection- when the penis becomes engorged with blood Ejaculation- when the semen leaves the penis Semen-mixture of sperm and other fluids Sterility-unable to reproduce Vasectomy- a surgical procedure in which the vas deferens in manipulated

Terms (cont) Sperm cells-cells produced in the testes Epididymis- gland located on top of each testicle that stores sperm

Concerns about male body: Nocturnal Emission (“wet dream”) Ejaculation that occurs during sleep Hernia Weak spot in abdominal wall near scrotum Sterility Unable to reproduce Due to malformed or nonexistent sperm

Cancers of the male Testicular Cancer 1% of all cancers in men Most common in ages 15-34 12% of all cancer deaths Signs: Slight enlargement in teste Lump (small, hard) Dull ache and heaviness

Cancers (cont.) Prostate Cancer Most common cancer in men after lung cancer Common in men 50 and older Signs: Difficult/frequent urination Blood in urine Lingering pain in back, hips, or pelvis

Cancer Early detection is best way to prevent or treat cancer Surgery may be necessary

Path of sperm: Testicles Epidiymis Vas Deferens Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Cowper’s Gland Urethra Exits penis
