Solutes: Electrolytes Vs. nonelectrolyte Substances that dissolve in water are classified according to whether they yield molecules or ions in solution. When an ionic compound dissolves, the positive and negative ions separate from each other and are surrounded by water molecules. These solutes are free to move around, making it possible for an electrical current to pass through the solution.

Solutes: Electrolytes Vs. nonelectrolyte Electrolyte – a substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that conducts electric current. Two examples of electrolytes. NaCl – sodium chloride HCl – hydrogen chloride

The solution process Which the easier way to make sweet tea; Add sugar to cold tea water? Or add sugar to hot tea water?

The solution process Factors affecting the rate of dissolution There are three factors. 1. surface area – increasing the surface area can speed up the dissolution process With a sugar cube, how can one increase the surface area when placed in water?

The solution process 2. Agitating Stirring or shaking can speed up the dissolution process bringing the solvent into contact with more of the solute. 3. Heating Heating a solvent can speed up the process. Heating causes the particles of the solvent to move faster and contact the particles of the solute more.

Solubility there is a limit as to how much solid solute will dissolve into a liquid solvent at a given temperature Keep adding sugar to tea, at some point the sugar will quit dissolving into the tea. The limit point is hard to predict precisely; it depends on the nature of the solute, nature of the solvent, and the temperature. Solution equilibrium – the physical state in which the opposing processes of dissolution and crystallization of a solute occur at equal rates.

Solubility Saturated vs unsaturated solutions: A solution that contains the maximum amount of dissolved solute is described as a saturated solution. Unsaturated solutions – is one that contains less solute than a saturated solution under the existing conditions.

Solubility Supersaturated: A solution that contains more dissolved solute than a saturated solution under the same conditions. as heated solution with a dissolved solute is cooled the solute comes out of dissolution and falls to the bottom of the container if it is agitated. If the solute does not come out as the temperature decreases then it is a supersaturated solution.

Solubility The solubility of a substance is the amount of that substance required to form a saturated solution with a specific amount of solvent at a specific temperature. Solubility is given as, grams of solute/100g of solvent ( or 100 ml) at a given temperature. Table page 410

Solute-Solvent interactions “like dissolves like” is a good rule to follow for predicting whether one substance will dissolve in another. What makes substance similar – -depends on the type of bonding -the polarity or nonpolarity of molecules -the intermolecular forces between the solute and solvent.

Solute-Solvent interactions Dissolving Ionic Compounds in Aqueous solutions: The polarity of water plays an important role in the formation of solutions of ionic compounds in water. The slightly charged parts of water molecules attract the ions in the ionic compounds and surrounds them to keep them separated from the other ions in the solution.

Solute-Solvent interactions The attraction between water molecules and the ions is strong enough to draw the ions away from the crystal surface and into solution. This solution process with water as the solvent is referred to as HYDRATION.
