QUESTION #1 Q.) What is Hecate’s plan for Macbeth and what does this reveal, if anything, about how the play will end? A.) Hecate's plan for Macbeth is to summon visions and spirits whose messages will fill him with a false sense of security and “draw him on to his confusion”. This reveals that there might be a chance that Macbeth will finally confess to what he has done.

QUESTION #2 Q.) Cite text evidence: in lines 9-23, cite lines that reveal Macbeth's change and tone regarding the events surrounding Banquo’s murder. A.) In lines 10-13 Hecate says “And which is worse, all you have done hath been but for a wayward son, spiteful and wrathful, who as others do, loves for his own ends, not for you.” The witches have told Macbeth prophecies about his future when all he does is behave like a angry and hateful brat who does not care about them.

QUESTION #3 Q.) What does Hecate symbolize? Explain. A.) Hecate symbolizes manipulation. She wants to be more involved in the witches plan for Macbeth’s downfall.

QUESTION #4 Q.) Explain how the paradox “Fair is foul and foul is fair” applies to this scene. A.) The paradox “fair is foul and foul is fair” applies to this scene because the witches are planning to manipulate Macbeth which in this situation is a fair punishment since he has been making cruel unwise decisions.

Symbolism Hecate symbolizes manipulation. She wants to be more involved in the witches plan for Macbeth. Irony It’s ironic how the reader thinks that the 3 weird sisters are in control and on top of everything, when there is actually someone above them. Theme The paradox “Fair is foul and foul is fair” applies to this scene. The witches are planning to manipulate Macbeth which is fair in this situation since he has killed multiple people, he deserves the worst. Conflict Hecate is angry at the witches for telling Macbeth his prophecies of his future because he behaves like a brat. Tone/Mood Hecate wants to participate in the witches manipulation to Macbeth which creates a tense mood because she was super unhappy with the witches and that makes the reader want to know what is bound to happen to Macbeth.

Quick Overview of Scene V Hecate calls the three witches to her to complain that her own part in Macbeth’s downfall has been overlooked. She now wishes personally to make his downfall complete.
