Building Monitor Training October 2010

Know Thy Building! Where are classes/labs held? Floor plans are in your building monitor bags Are they accurate? Do they need corrections? What’s the current schedule – what class will be in what room, when? Keep a copy of the current schedule readily available Are there other offices/work areas where individuals may be? Some offices are on the periphery of the buildings If you are in a laboratory building, do you know where your emergency cut offs are?

Know The Plan Do you know the plan for different types of emergencies? (some may require evacuation, others a lock down in place) Can you easily find the plan? Is it available in more than one location in your building? Where are the orange emergency procedure ‘cards’? Know where the equipment is for evacuating DSS students. Identify someone who will be the person to help with disabled students. What is the evacuation route for your building and from your area? Where is your emergency bag? When was the last time you checked your bag?

Practice The Plan Have you done a mock walk-thru yourself? How would you do an evacuation? Where do you start? Where do you end? Does it systematically cover all areas of your building? How would you initiate a ‘lock down’ in your building?

Get Help With The Plan Are there others who you can count on to help? Other staff or faculty that are frequently in your building? Have you recruited them to assist you in case of an emergency? An assistant building monitor? Have you practiced what you want them to do?

Encourage The Faculty Faculty should have a class roster – they may or may not be taking roll in class but hopefully, will know their students They are the leader in their class If an evacuation or a lock down is required, they need to lead the students Talk with them as they use your building so that they are aware of you and your role as building monitor
