Going Small in a Big Way: The Institute for Quantum Computing March 2009

The Quantum World: some unusual properties -Observing quantum systems cannot be done without perturbing them: quantum cryptography MIT Technology Review -Quantum systems can be in more than one state at once: quantum computing MIT Technology Review

Mission of the Institute Our mission is to aggressively explore and advance the application of quantum mechanical systems to a vast array of relevant information processing techniques. We will accomplish this by creating a truly unique environment that fosters cutting-edge research at the highest level and collaboration between researchers in the areas of computer, engineering, mathematical and physical sciences. Strategic Objectives Establish an international centre of excellence doing research at the highest level Become an international magnet for students Become a source of information, analysis and commentary on the state of quantum information processing

Taking up the opportunity Institute founded in 2002 Mike and Ophelia Lazaridis donate $50M 2005: UW commits to 30 faculty positions 2006: $50M Grant from Gov’t of Ontario 2007: CFI/MRI approve $48M funding for fabrication facility 2009: $50M Grant from Gov’t of Canada Other grants (ORDCF, ARO, CRC,CFI, NSERC, MITACS) $15M

In 2008; 17 faculty, 21 pdfs, 73 students Goal: 30 faculty, 50 pdfs, 125 students

International Peer Reviews From a CFI/MRI proposal that was granted (2007) Comments from the International panel “This proposal to outfit the world's best centre for quantum computing, is very broad in scope, dealing with a variety of proposed research activities and technologies. The quantum-related research proposed is outstanding, exciting and world class and will lead to considerable economic benefits (e.g. through significant increases in knowledge, device development and creation of spin-off companies)” From a NSERC review panel in Fall 2006 “The Committee believes IQC to be the best institution of its type in the world today. The quality of IQC’s work is exceptional; it has acquired excellent faculty and students in its first four years of operation; it enjoys strong commitment from UW senior management; and IQC has attracted private financial support at a level almost unique in the physical sciences.” From a NSERC review panel in Winter 2009 “IQC is arguably the leading achiever in the world in its field of endeavor, on all fronts.”

Conclusion We are at the beginning of a technological revolution that will be the economic engine of the 21st century Canada has established a coherent program in quantum information led by IQC, linking academia, government and industry Major resources are being invested which has given Canada a world class reputation in leading edge science and technology 12
