Word Study #15 – ROOT WORDS bio carn corp

Brainstorm words that use these roots! Write these down! bio - life carn – body, flesh corp – body Brainstorm words that use these roots!

biodegradable - adjective able to be decomposed by biological forces, especially bacteria We put all the biodegradable garbage in the compost pile so that it would decompose into soil.

biography - noun an account of a person’s life that is told or written by another person The biography told about the athlete’s early life as well as her career as a professional tennis player.

bionic - adjective related to things that are modeled after living organisms; having abilities improved by mechanical devices My grandmother jokes that with her joint replacement she is the bionic woman.

biosphere - noun the part of the earth where life can exist Without the biosphere surrounding our planet, Earth would be as lifeless.

carnage - noun great destruction of life, especially in battle; slaughter The war zone was the site of unbelievable carnage.

carnivorous – adjective meat-eating Wolves are carnivorous, eating small animals but not plants.

corporation - noun a group of people who are joined into one legal body The corporation had monthly meetings of its board of directors and officers.

corpulent – adjective characterized by excessive body weight or stoutness The corpulent young boy enrolled in a weight- loss program.

corpuscle - noun any red or white cell that floats in the blood Red corpuscles carry oxygen throughout the body and white corpuscles kill harmful organisms that enter the body.

symbiosis – noun the shared existence of two organisms where they both benefit from living close together Bees and flowers exist in a state of symbiosis.
