What is a diary? A diary is a record with separate entries arranged by date reporting on what has happened over the course of a day/week. May include a person's experiences, and thoughts or feelings Someone who keeps a diary is known as a diarist. Diaries are written daily/weekly, journals less frequently.

Types of diaries Travel diary/journal Daily diary Diet diary War diary

How to write a diary Put the date/weather at the top Start with “Dear Diary,” Start writing! Write about how you feel and why you feel that way Start with the morning. Describe how it went and do not leave out any details Move on to the afternoon, then the evening and finally the night. Always say good night in the end and try to write a short summary of your day. Close with your name. You can also add your signature. If you want to, end your entry with "Bye" or "Good night."

Date format USA: day + month + day, year Friday October 7th, 2011 UK/Australia/New Zealand/Ireland/South Africa day + month + year 7 October 2011 Korea: year + month + day 2011/10/7

In the morning I got up early. I was awakened by my wake up alarm. I overslept and was late getting to school. I ate a big breakfast before leaving the house. The weather was nice; the air was clean and fresh. I went to school by bus.

In the afternoon The sun was shining and it was really hot. I had lunch at the cafeteria. I had chicken deopbap for lunch. I had two classes: English Grammar and Writing. I went to my writing class. I saw my friends.

In the evening The sunset was beautiful. I got home by 7pm and had dinner. I ordered in. I did my homework and felt really tired. I watched the news and a reality show on TV. I brushed my teeth and got into bed.

Wrapping up Today was a great day. What an exciting day! I hope tomorrow is even better. I felt blue all day. It was a long day.

Simple Example Sunday October 2nd, 2011 Dear Diary, Today was Sunday. I made plans to go out with my friends. I left my apartment and went to Tongmak in Hayang. While my friends and I were eating and drinking, we ran into some other friends and decided to hang out together. We ordered a lot of anju and drank too much makkeolli. I need to get to sleep because I have class tomorrow morning. I will write again soon… Good night! Sincerely, Mr. Makkeoli Drinker

Intermediate Example Sunday October 2nd, 2011 Dear Diary, I went downtown this morning to meet my boyfriend today. We had lots of fun shopping, eating and watching a movie. Later, however, we ran into my boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend. When I saw her, I shouted, “He’s my boyfriend now!” After that, my boyfriend got upset at me and we had a big fight. At the end of our argument, he dumped me! I hope we get back together tomorrow… What a miserable day! I will write again tomorrow! Miss I made a big mistake!

Write your own diary entry Write about one day At least 15 lines Proper formatting (date + salutation) Correct grammar (mainly simple past tense) Chronological (correct sequence/order) 50% process description (actions) 50% feelings/reactions (lots of adjectives)
