With Mrs Fleur McPherson and Mrs Gina Perman Welcome to Year 2! With Mrs Fleur McPherson and Mrs Gina Perman
What happens when? Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are Mrs McPherson’s days to teach and Thursday and Friday are Mrs Perman’s. Monday is library book change day. Monday and Wednesday are PE days.
What does my child need? A named water bottle every day A coat every day If possible, a pair of named wellies left in school A book bag every day
What is different about Year Two? Learning is more structured and adult led as opposed to learning through play in Year One. Children are expected to learn more independently. We expect handwriting and presentation to improve. There will be end of Key Stage tests in May but we urge you not to talk to your child about them or worry about them. They are carried out in a very low-key way and there is nothing for them to worry about.
What will the Topic be? This half-term, our whole school topic will be “Our World”. We will be having a “Travel Agents” role play area in the classroom. On Friday 30th September, we will be visiting The Eden Project. There will be further details and requests for parent helpers on the letter about this, which will be coming soon.
What homework will my child have? Daily reading A piece of Maths, Literacy or Topic work each week Please feel free to do any home learning on anything which interests your child on the topic web we are sending home. We will happily share and celebrate work completed at home.
What is the Reading Rainbow? In Year Two, we have a reading incentive, called the Reading Rainbow. Each child will receive a coloured bookmark for every 30 times they read at home. Your child will need to read at least five times a week in term time and some weekend and holiday reads too if they would like to reach the top of the rainbow by the end of the year. It is only possible to count one read a day and we will check the children’s reading records daily.
Can parents help? If you would like to offer time to hear readers or help with any specific tasks, such as cookery, gardening or displays, please speak to one of the team and we will arrange a time. If you would like to donate any outdoor plants, we would be grateful. We are hoping to give our outdoor area a makeover to improve opportunities for outdoor learning. We would be grateful for any donations of dressing up clothes, postcards or travel brochures for our Role-Play area.
What if parents need help? If there is anything which you need to discuss with us, please feel free to catch us at the start or the end of the day. Alternatively, we can make an appointment at a suitable to discuss things in more detail if needed. Are there any questions?
