Broad Town C of E Primary School Welcome to Class1 Miss Dent

The start and End of the Day Morning Routine Class 1 do not line up in the playground. Our classroom is open from 8:50am and the children can come in and get ready for the start of the day at 9:00am. Children should put their own belongings away and hand in any books or letters. Children may not play on the outdoor play structures before or after school. Home time 3.15 Class 1 are dismissed one at a time by the teacher. This does take some time but it is important we know the children have been collected by the correct person.

A typical day in Class 1… Morning tasks before the register Phonics Literacy Assembly Playtime Maths Lunch Guided Reading Other subjects (e.g Science, History, P.E, art etc) Story

Staffing The Class 1 teacher is Miss Dent. Mrs Whetham teaches the class each Wednesday afternoon. Some children will be receiving additional support, usually in the form of small groups, from the teaching assistant, Miss Jenkins.

Groupings Children will be taught in ability groups for phonics. For other subjects, most of the children are taught as a class with activities differentiated to suit different abilities.

Rewards and Sanctions Traffic Lights - children start each day on the green - if they do not follow the rules, they are moved to the black as a warning. - if they continue to make the wrong choice, they are moved to the yellow and will miss some playtime. - if they have to move to the red, they miss more playtime. Miss Long will be informed and a record kept of this. Rewards - praise and positive comments - stickers and certificates

Golden Time The children earn minutes towards Golden Time throughout the week. They earn 5 minutes per day for good behaviour and effort and also gain a bonus 5 minutes if they collect 5 minutes for all 5 days. Golden Time is on a Friday afternoon and the children can choose their activities as a reward for their effort during the week.

Homework All homework is given out on Friday and is expected to be returned on the following Friday. Please encourage your children to hand in homework on time as late homework may not be marked. If your child has any problems completing a homework task, please let me know as soon as possible – rather than leave it until the day it is supposed to be in. Year 1 children will also have spellings to learn. The spelling test is on Friday. Foundation Stage children have phonic books which have examples of the sounds covered that week. Please return these every Monday morning.

Reading Children will be expected to read at home at least four times a week. Please record this in their yellow reading records.

How Do The Children Know What To Do? Each piece of work has clear targets which the children can use themselves to check that they have achieved the required standard. Most of the time, there are challenge targets to encourage the children to stretch themselves and try the next step. Children also have individual targets for writing which are at the front of their Literacy Book.

General Reminders Please check that everything is named. PE-all children must have a fully named PE kit in school everyday. There must be no jewellery worn during PE. If you wish your child to continue to wear earrings during these sessions, written permission must be given accepting responsibility if an accident occurs. Information comes home with your eldest child in the form of a letter. If they are away, the letter will be put in their drawer. Reading books and records should come to school everyday. Please make sure children have named water bottles and they are changed regularly. Please encourage children to bring a healthy variety of foods for break and lunch! Children are responsible for their own ‘tuck’ money.

Can You Help? We have been very fortunate to have a lot of brilliant helpers in Class 1. We are looking for more this year! Can you commit to helping at a regular time each week?
