“So You Want to be an Explorer?” Respond to the question below. Write your response in your notebook. One page minimum. If you could explore any region of the World, any spot in the Universe, or any place on earth, where would that place be and why do you want to explore there? What motivates you? What do you think you might find? What fears or anxieties confront you?

Open Response One Clearly Columbus and those who followed him ushered in one of the most important events in history and stimulated dramatic changes in the Old and New Worlds. A. Describe in detail 3 impacts of Columbus and the Europeans on the New World. B. Pick one of the impacts described in part A and describe how that has affected the world in which you live.

Open Response Two European Exploration of the New World led to the convergence of European, African and Native-American people. The meeting of these three peoples resulted in some profiting from the interactions and others not. A. Explain with supports whom were the “winners” of the “Great Convergence.” B. Explain with supports whom were the “losers” of the “Great Convergence.” C. Of the three groups mentioned in the “Great Convergence” explain why some remain “losers” today.

Vocabulary Saga: Norse legends and records of their journeys. Norse: Northern Europeans from present day Sweden, Demark and Norway. Marco Polo: an Italian who traveled extensively on a trading trip to East Asian land of Cathay, or present day China in the 13th century. Description of the World: book by Marco Polo describing his travels east. Renaissance: a period in Europe from 1300s to 1600 marked by a new interest in learning and knowledge.

Vocab Vinland: Norse name for area in the New World settled by the Norse people and it means “land of wine.”

Vocab Johannes Gutenberg Invented the printing press with movable type., German.

Vocabulary Crusades A series of wars between 1096 and late 1200s were Christian Crusaders and Muslims fought for control of Holy Land. Importance: spurred trade, political stability and ended the intellectual isolation of Europe. Columbian Exchange The exchange of goods and ideas and peoples between Europe and the Americas, named after Christopher Columbus. Plantations Large farms that usually produce only one crop to be sold. Northwest Passage A Northern sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific.

Vocab Strait of Magellan Narrow body of water off the tip of South America connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Vocab Conquistador Spanish word for conquers. Bartolome de Las Casas Spanish priest who became an advocate for the Native American Indians.

Vocabulary Missions Spanish religious settlements which usually included a small town and church surrounded by farmland. Presidio a fort near a mission, placed to protect the inhabitants. Peninsulares People born in Spain and had highest standing in New World Creoles Had Spanish parents but born in New Spain.

Vocab Treaty of Tordesillas or Pope’s Line An agreement between Spain and Portugal which drew a line running North and South at 370 leagues West of the Cape Verde Islands. Land to the west of the line belonged to Spain and land East of the line to Portugal. Treaty expanded on a line drawn earlier by Pope Alexander VI. Line falls close to 50 degrees west.

Vocabulary Santa Fe Capitulations The name of the contract between Columbus, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand as they sponsored the explorer’s trips to the New World. Gave Columbus among other things, tile of Admiral of the Oceans, Viceroy and Governor of the New Lands and 10% of the wealth claimed from the West.

Vocab Caravel Sailing ship that had a shallow draft, desirable for long ocean voyages and was easily maneuverable. It was able to sail into the wind. Missionary: A person who spreads the word of God.

Vocabulary Empire: Large areas of land or territories controlled by one country. Cartographer: a map maker Circumnavigate: means to go all the way around, such as sail around the world.
