Technology Distribution Procedures

History of Take-home initiative Westlawn/ Davis Hills grant and Title I funding, 2010 Whitesburg Middle grant and local funding, Oct, 2011-

Purpose of Take-home Extend learning time Provide technology access outside the school day Decrease digital divide, providing equitable access to technology tools Provide engaging standards-based online activities for all students Teach digital citizenship and cyber safety Increase student accessibility to outstanding online reference materials like the ALEX, AVL and APTPLUS

Equipment received Dell Latitude 2120 Netbook Netbook case Computrace software loaded for tracking and recovery of computers Recovered a stolen computer at Davis Hills Reimbursed for a computer that was not recovered

Student/Parent Responsibilities Use computer only as an educational tool Keep in possession of the student or locked in a secure location at all times Charge netbook nightly and bring netbook to school each day Follow HCS Policies and Procedures for Internet Safety, Student Harassment, Student Discipline Return computer school upon withdrawing from Huntsville City Schools Report lost, damaged, stolen computer to the school File a police report if computer is lost/stolen

Disciplinary consequences of any inappropriate use, unattended computer, or destructive care: Parent notification Inability to take home the computer Restriction to school use under teacher supervision Disciplinary sanctions as outlined in Policy 106-1, Student Discipline

Parent/Student Financial Responsibilities Responsibility for all items assigned to them at the school level and the board may require payment for damages to property Payment of a non-refundable use and maintenance fee of $35.00 upon issuance of the computer. A waiver is available for students qualifying for free and reduced lunch

Parent/Student Financial Responsibilities Payment for reasonable cost of repair or replacement if the computer assigned to your child is damaged through negligence, vandalism, or failure to follow the proper care guidelines. The current replacement cost of a netbook, should the board require payment, is $650.22 Payment of a 10% fee of the repair cost for any non-willful damages. A waiver is available for students qualifying for free and reduced lunch.

District Responsibilities Inventory and image computers for student use Maintain computer hardware and software Load Computrace tracking software Check out to students using Booktracks which ties computer to child and is updated nightly through iNow Assure that each student receives the same computer for four years

District Responsibilities Provide additional computers for classroom use as needed Assure Internet safety in the school Educate students in digital citizenship and cyber safety Provide a list of free parental control programs on the HCS website Train teachers on integration of technology into curriculum

Digital Citizenship at home Parental controls in Windows 7 and in Internet browsers Home Internet settings Free parental control programs publicized to parents Parent supervision
