What is APAN?

APAN Terms of Reference Capabilities Sites – APAN Sites are virtual spaces created for a specific organization, team, or topic where Members can collaborate and share information with each other.  All Sites are made up of Site Owners and Sites Members. It is recommended to use an APAN Site if you would like to create a structured information sharing environment. Groups – APAN Groups are virtual spaces created for a specific organization, team, or topic where Members can collaborate and share information with each other.  All Groups are made up of Group Owners, Group Managers, Group Members, Applications, and Widgets.

APAN Terms of Reference Capabilities Forums – a place where users can ask and answer questions or discuss specific topics. Click on the new post button to start a forum threat (discussion topic) or browse through the current threads to jump into a forum discussion (Members) Blogs – used for one way communication such as announcements or to distribute information.  Most groups will only allow owners of the group to create blog posts, but all group member can post comments pertaining to the blog posts (Managers) Wiki – great for creating content with multiple authors.  Click on the edit link to add or edit content. (Members) Media Galleries – users can upload a variety of different types of files to share with other users.  Other users can download, rate or comment on files. (Members)

APAN Terms of Reference Capabilities (Cont.) Peer to Peer Chat – If you have already begun to connect with users, you will see their name list in your Peer-to-Peer Chat roster at the bottom of your screen.  Click on a username to begin a real-time, one-on-one conversation. (Members) Group Chat – allows group members to have real-time group conversations.  Navigate to a page where a group chat is located and started chatting.  Not all groups have group chat enabled.  Contact the group owner if you would like to start a group chat. (Members) Group Membership - An APAN Group Member is an APAN user who can read and contribute to the Group. Members can add/edit/delete their own content, view/comment on other Member’s content, and participate in Group Chat sessions. APAN Terms of Reference Capabilities (Group Setup Options) 1. Group Name - You can edit the name of the group, however APAN recommends that you keep your Group Name the same once it has been set. 2. Group Avatar - You may upload an image for your group, which will appear at the top right of your Group pages. 3. URL - This is the end of the web address where your Group will be located, for example www.apan.org/group_url_here. 4. Description - The group description will be under your Group Name and should explain the purpose of your group.

APAN Terms of Reference Capabilities (Group Setup Options) 5.  Group Type - Select the membership and visibility setting for your group, you can change this at any time. Joinless - Membership will not be tracked and permission to the group will be managed using site-level roles. Public (Open Membership) - Everyone can read your group, it is listed publicly, and any registered user can join it without approval. Public (Closed Membership) - Everyone can read your group, it is listed publicly, and users must be approved before becoming group members. Private (Listed) - Only members can read your group, it is listed publicly (title and description), and users must be approved before becoming group members. Private (Unlisted) - Only members can read your group, it is not listed publicly, and users must be approved before becoming group members

APAN Terms of Reference Capabilities (Group Setup Options) 6.  Parent Group - If you want your group to be a sub group of another group, then enter the group name. 7.  Contact Form - The contact form allows group visitors to send email messages to group owners. 8.  Messages - Allows a list of recent group activity and status messages to be displayed. Group members can create new status messages.
