Design of Cold Water Networks Procedure of the Jordanian Code of Water Supply Systems

Sanitary Systems Design By: Yahya Ayesh (ID 0057139) Moa’ath Al-Heeh (ID 0051491) All Rights Reserved to Ministry of General Works.

Types of Distribution Systems Static Head Distribution System. Pressurized distribution system.

Static Head Distribution System In this system, water tanks are used such that its height is enough to provide pressure head to cover frictional losses in the network, also to provide the minimum amount of pressure and flow rate.

Pressurized distribution system In this system, pumps are used to supply the network with water from the tanks or wells which are under the level of the network or point of design.

Determination of Flow Rate Water supply systems will be designed based on the total equivalent units for the whole network. The design of each line will be based on the total equivalent units of that line. The equivalent units can be determined based on the following tables which are provided in the Jordanian code:

By determination of the equivalent unit for each item and the total equivalent units the flow rate in (L/s) will be obtained according to the following figure:

Calculation Pressure Losses

The equivalent length can be calculated as shown in the table:

The determination of the pressure losses as a result of friction based on type of the pipe and its size according to the following figures:

Available Pressure Calculation For static head distribution system: h : static head from the middle of the tank to desired point of design.

For pressurized distribution system: Pp : pressure provide by the pump. Ps : static pressure between point of design and pump level.

Remaining Pressure

Design Procedures Assumed Diameter Method: a) Determination of the desired flow rate. b) The diameter is assumed using the charts in region of the allowed velocities (V=1.2 - 3 m/s) c) Developed length of the pipe determined. d) P (loss) is calculated. e) The remaining pressure and available pressure is calculated .

Equal Pressure Drop Method: a) Determination of the desired flow rate. b) The pressure loss rate is fixed. c) The diameter will be obtained at each flow rate. d) Developed length of the pipe determined. e) P (loss) is calculated. f) The remaining pressure and available pressure is calculated .
